2008 Top New Year Resolutions

Here are 10 ways that a News Years resolution can change your life and the live of those that you love.

1. Become Financially Fit:

With the economy and the current credit crisis, your number resolution should be to become more financially fit. You can do this several ways, including, stop your endless spending, eliminate the use of credit cards and if you are struggling to get by, consider a home based business.

Why choose a home based business over a part time job? With a part time job, you are away from your family more, it costs you to drive to work and there are no tax advantages, so you are working to pay more taxes.

With a home based business, you can tap into more than 12 home based tax credits and the average home based business, worked properly can net you an average of $63,000.00.

2. Exercise:

Regular exercise can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non insulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain, osteoporosis, and can improve your mood and help you to better manage stress.

For the greatest overall health benefits, experts recommend that you do 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic activity three or more times a week and some type of muscle strengthening activity and stretching at least twice a week. However, if you are unable to do this level of activity, you can gain substantial health benefits by accumulating 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity a day, at least five times a week.

If you have been inactive for a while, you may want to start with less strenuous activities such as walking or swimming at a comfortable pace. Beginning at a slow pace will allow you to become physically fit without straining your body. Once you are in better shape, you can gradually do more strenuous activity.

3. "Pay it Foreword"

Kindness is contagious and so are small acts of kindness. We all have seen the commercials and even on the news, the latest that I can recall was during Christmas, when a Starbucks Coffee out east had someone in the drive thru lane pay for the car behind him and the cycle went on for over four hours.

You have the ability to help someone else achieve their personal or business objectives, weather it is simply some encouragement, a financial gift, some mentoring and other acts of generosity, get out and "pay it foreword".

4. Stop Smoking:

I know, this is harder than it seems, I am a smoker and am addicted to nicotine and have tried to quit countless times myself, and will keep quitting until I get it right.

The benefits of quitting are unlimited! We all expect our health to improve, but that is just the beginning of this wonderful journey. The return on our efforts to kick the habit far outweigh the work it takes to achieve this goal. The benefits truly are unlimited!

There are over 50 benefits of quitting smoking, but for the purpose of this article I will only list a few.

1. More stamina, endurance and confidence

2. More cash in your pocket

3. I smell better, my car smells better, my house smells better and I can smell better!

5. Stop Drinking:

Here I go again, the hypocrite, yes I drink as well, but it, especially at my age (41) is starting to affect my health. You may be thinking "drink in moderation", well that is fine for some, but my personality, totally TYPE A personality with some OCD traits it not so easy.

Again, there are several benefits of not drinking, but I will only list a few that make the most sense here.

1. You will not waste time consuming alcohol, or recovering from consuming alcohol

2. More money in your pocket

3. You will save you liver, and maybe eliminate other health issues you are experiencing

6. Stop Negative Thoughts:

Are you the negative person? Keeping your attention on positive thoughts is a consuming task. It takes a lot of discipline and retraining of your own thought processes to constantly keep your head on a productive space.

As much as we would like them not to, our thoughts will wander, things will upset us, and doubt will kick in at various times throughout our waking hours. It’s normal and should be allowed as a large part of our self-development process.

7. Get Involved:

There are many ways to get involved with your community, church or even your own home and make a positive contribution.

You can volunteer your time to help a charity or participate in a community engagement activity. You may want to get involved in fundraising or helping to increase local awareness about an issue.

Try being home and spending more time with your own family and get involved with the task of building a caring and nurturing atmosphere at home.

8. Go to Church:

There are several benefits of going to church, from financial to health and safety to even better grades for your children.

There are several benefits of going to church, especially for your children and many have scientific backed studies to prove these claims, here is a partial' list:

1. Increase the average life expectancy of your children by 8 years
2. Significantly reduce their use and risk from Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs
3. Dramatically lower their risk of suicide
4. Help them rebound from depression 70% faster
5. Dramatically reduce their risk for committing a crime
6. Improve their attitude at school and increase their school participation
7. Reduce their risk for rebelliousness
8. Reduce the likelihood that they would binge drink in college
9. Improve their odds for a "very happy" life
10. Provide them with a life-long moral compass
11. Get them to wear their seat belts more often

9. Eat Less:

I am not saying that you should go on a diet here, I am simply saying "eat less" and watch what you eat.

We have all heard the saying "garbage in, garbage out" or "you are what you eat" and this is all true.

There are benefits of eating less and eating the right foods, but once again, I will only outline a few.

1. More energy, more stamina and better concentration

2. More money in your pocket, no more "biggie sizes"

3. Better appearance and more confidence

10. Travel: (My Personal Favorite!)

You're tired, you drag yourself out of bed in the morning, and you're losing your enthusiasm for your job, your hobbies and your social life. You've got some vacation time banked, but cash flow is low and you're wondering if it's worth the effort to plan to go away.

Between budgets and busy schedules, it's not easy to set aside time and plan a getaway. But getting away, even for a short period, can do wonders for your well-being. You really cannot afford not to travel.

If you follow step 1 above and become more financially fit and maybe considered a home based travel business, then you are ready to take advantage of these benefits of travel:

1- You'll reduce your stress

Travel gives you an opportunity to relax and de-stress. It decreases burnout. Even if it's a business trip that forces you to put in longer hours at a conference, focus on the fact that you're in another country or city. Traveling can be stressful, especially if your trip consists of a lot of sightseeing, your meetings involve a variety of languages or your destination is a bustling metropolis. But travel stress is positive stress, not the kind of anxiety caused by work or tension related to home life. Stress reduction, however you accomplish it, is always healthy.

2- You'll avoid monotony

As the saying goes, "A change is as good as a rest." A trip of any kind provides you with a break from the norm, and that alone can inject you with energy. It's therapeutic to make a change from your daily routine -- doing so prevents your mind and body from stagnating.

3- You'll get outdoors

When you're traveling, you're more likely to be outside instead of trapped inside an office. This means you'll be out in the fresh air, enjoying the outdoors. Even if you're not hiking in the mountains or lazing on a hammock on the beach, you'll be breathing more deeply, re-oxygenating your blood. You'll also gain benefits from the exposure to sunlight, provided you take necessary precautions to avoid sunburn.

4- You'll be more active

Travel can involve additional activities. Maybe your plans will include whitewater rafting, sightseeing or playing beach volleyball. Unless you want to rest at all times during your vacation, you'll likely do more walking than you would at home, and generally be much more active than you are in your normal routine.

5- You'll enjoy your food

Unless you're on a cruise or at an all-inclusive resort, you'll likely snack less than you do at home. Eating in restaurants sure beats picking up fast food or microwaving leftovers. You'll probably try different foods abroad, like sushi, moussaka or couscous. You won't necessarily watch your portions, carbs or calorie count, but you will enjoy indulging in diverse types of gastronomic delicacies.

6- You'll have an attitude adjustment

Planning is part of the fun. Having a trip to look forward to can break up the monotony of your 9 to 5 grind, and anticipating the break time ahead will help you to better deal with your current work problems. Once you've set out on your trip, it won't be long before you begin to gain new perspectives. Traveling gives you a whole new appreciation for different cultures and lifestyles, which broadens your horizons and can help you enjoy life that much more. And, depending on your destination, traveling can give you a whole new perspective on your own city.

7- You'll meet people

Traveling enables you to meet people from all over the world. Socializing is great therapy and helps you learn about other cultures.

8- You'll create memorable experiences

If you're able to visit all the destinations of your choice, you won't have to regret not having done so later in life. You will feel more fulfilled in the long run. So if you've been dreaming about going to the Cayman Islands, now might be the time.

9- You'll reconnect with your partner

Travel gives you an opportunity to spend quality time with the lady in your life, without the intrusion of day to day responsibilities. It offers restorative qualities. Relaxing in a hot tub together sure beats fighting about whose turn it is to clean the bathroom.

Happy New Year to you and your family and our thoughts and prayers are with you in 2008 from everyone at YTB and YTB Travelmore!
