Costa Rica Vacation Package, And Why You Should Take One

A Costa Rica Vacation Package is something to be thought about very carefully, even if you have never considered Costa Rica before as a vacation destination.

Apart from the fact that Costa Rica is exotic and tropical, the fact that it is a dream destination for a lot of people ought to make you check it out, because it could be just the right thing to do to book a Costa Rica Tour package this year.

There are good reasons for this not the least of which is that Costa Rica is one of the most naturally beautiful places you could ever wish to visit. A tiny South American country has got everything you need for the ultimate in getaway holidays.

When you consider the variety of sights to see and places to go, including fiery volcanoes, lush green tropical jungle with lots of unusual and exotic plants, animals and birds. This is not to ignore the beautiful beaches lining the Pacific coast.

A Costa Rica Vacation package can include any or all of these things, and then there is the huge variety of places to stay with accommodation to suit every budget.

Be a little careful and don’t arrive during the high season between December and April hoping to find a good hotel. You need your Costa Rica vacation package in place before you arrive.

Private lodges, all inclusive resorts, expensive hotels especially in remote areas should always be reserved in advanced to avoid any problems at all times.

If however you are looking for a luxury vacation Costa Rica then the Golfo de Papagayo is great. This part of Costa Rica is where the most expensive hotel in Costa Rica is, and that is the Four Seasons.

If you want something within your budget, then you could do worse than go to the Nicoya Peninsula. There are fantastic beaches here, and all types of accommodation and prices.

To find lower prices on your Costa Rica Vacation Package try the rainy season between April and November. The weather will still be pretty good just interspersed with short sharp rain showers, so you can save yourself quite a bit of money. One thing to beware of is the mandatory sales and tourism tax of 16.39% on everything!!

Nevertheless a Costa Rica Vacation Package can be very good value for money.

AMR to divest its regional airline

By DAVID KOENIG AP Business Writer © 2007 The Associated Press
TOOLS.DALLAS — The parent of American Airlines said Wednesday it plans to sell or spin off its American Eagle regional carrier next year. Its shares rose more than 7 percent.

Investors have been pressing AMR Corp. to sell the regional airline and other assets, moves they say could raise money and lift AMR's stock price.

American Airlines is the nation's biggest airline. The industry has been under pressure from record fuel prices. But AMR has posted six straight profitable quarters as planes were more full and passengers paid higher average fares.

Ray Neidl, an analyst with Calyon Securities, said it was too early to put a price tag on American Eagle.

American Eagle operates regional jets that connect American Airlines hubs such as Dallas-Fort Worth with smaller cities. It has about 300 planes and operates about 1,700 daily flights to more than 150 cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It generates annual revenue of about $2.3 billion.

Fort Worth-based AMR said in a statement that it is still studying whether to spin off Eagle to AMR shareholders, sell to a third party or divest the carrier in some other way. Although planned for 2008, the timing of the divestiture could be affected by economic, industry and financial-market conditions, the company said.

AMR said divesting Eagle "is in the best interests of AMR and its shareholders." AMR said the move would also give Eagle the chance to win new business and provide new opportunities for its employees.

Shares of AMR jumped $1.52, or 7.4 percent, to $22.08 in afternoon trading Wednesday after briefly trading as high as $22.66. The shares had lost half their value since late January and are still near their 52-week low of $19.

"The decision comes after a careful and deliberate evaluation of the strategy that will best enable us to continue to create value for our shareholders," AMR Chairman and Chief Executive Gerard Arpey said in a statement.

Arpey said the company had built Eagle to be "fully capable of standing on its own and is well-positioned to pursue growth opportunities outside of the AMR corporate structure."
The divestiture would also include Eagle's Executive Airlines Inc. affiliate, which operates American Eagle flights in the Bahamas and the Caribbean from bases in Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Calyon Securities's Neidel said the divestiture would help AMR shareholders.

"This is one asset that probably should be spun off," Neidl said. "It can be operated more cost-effectively as an independent business." He said new owners might be able to reduce pilot costs.
Shareholders have been pressing the company to sell assets such as Eagle, the AAdvantage frequent-flier program, and its investment-management arm. They have said the stock market undervalues those businesses and AMR would be better off selling them.

The most vocal of these investors has been FL Group, an investment fund based in Iceland that holds about 9 percent of AMR stock. The fund argued that AMR management was moving too slowly on divestitures, and he began contacting AMR directors.

A spokesman for FL Group, Halldor Kristmannsson, said the fund couldn't give a detailed reaction to Wednesday's announcement yet but "we welcome any initiative that looks to enhance shareholder value."

As recently as July, Arpey said AMR was not convinced that selling those side businesses would help shareholders. AMR officials also noted that AAdvantage was closely intertwined with American Airlines and that selling the frequent-flier program could have unintended consequences for the core airline.

Egypt Resorts and Attractions

If you make a decision to spend your vacation in Egypt, usually you have a choice of two sea resorts – Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. They both are very popular, but Hurghada is situated in African continent while Sharm El Sheikh lies on Sinai Peninsula.

About 30 years ago Hurghada was just a simple fishing village. But now, with it's a resort with crystal clear water, untouched reefs. It has become one of the best Egyptian tourist destinations. A significant part of its fame Hurghada gained as one of the best diving centers of the world. Like all oriental cities Hurghada make living out of trade, so if when you walk along the city, be ready to beat off the pressing offers of the sellers, deserving to make you buy their souvenirs. There are some more entertainments except shopping and diving in Hurghada. You can make a jeep trip to a desert, visit Bedouin’s village there; you can see corals and some natural preserves. Hurghada is also has aqua-park. Fishing is one of the popular tourist’s activities in Hurghada too. Today, Hurghada is known as a party town, particularly among Europeans. Locals and others will tell you that life begins at night in Hurghada, with the many, many clubs.

The best time to visit Hurghada is October-November. In winter there are strong winds and it becomes dark very early.

When you are in Hurghada don’t miss the chance to see one of the most outstanding monuments of Egypt history – Luxor and the Valley of the King. Pharaoh’s tombs and ancient temples are worth visiting.

Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the most accessible and developed tourist resort communities on the Sinai Peninsula. All around are Bedouins, colorful tents, mountains and sea. Na'ama Beach is one of the centers of the tourist activities. Located just north of Sharm, this area is developing into a resort town of its own. For those who like shopping, the Sharm El-Sheikh mall provides shops with both foreign and local products, including jewelry, leather goods, clothing, pottery and books. Nobody leaves Sharm el-Sheikh without several useless but very pleasant souvenirs. Like Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh is famous for diving too, but it has more diversity in corals.
Those, who choose Sharm el-Sheikh also has opportunity to watch the attraction of Sinai peninsula - The Monastery of St Catherine, Mount Sinai (or Mountain of Moses), Pharaoh's Island and Salah El Din Citadel, Nabq National Park, Ras Abu Galum National Park and so-called 'Coloured Canyon'.

The last but not the least of the Egypt must-sees is Cairo with its pyramids. From either Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh it will be a long trip, but you will never regret it!

When going to Egypt, be aware that 3-star hotels in Egypt have nothing to do with 3-star hotels in Europe. So, it’s better to choose 4 or 5 star hotel. Probably it saves you from many inconveniences. Often, the large hotels have zoos, playgrounds, discos, bars, a number of pools and even small theaters. So, may be you will to want to leave your hotel.

Anyway, a trip to Egypt promises to be exotic and interesting experience. by: Constance Blair

Travel Parties, A Growing Trend

Travel parties are a growing trend, and now you can host a travel party and jump onboard of this growing trend?

I wanted to start a HOME BASED BUSINESS, and after researching and getting into the vacation rental business and seen just how lucrative the travel industry was, I wanted a bigger piece of the pie.

I ran across a company called YTB Travel Biz. YTB brings you the perfect opportunity to transform your life by combining the powerful information handling capability of the Internet with the world’s most dynamic product – travel - and the personal touch of independent, home based business people. YTB has joined these three trends together in a flawless combination. The elements of honesty, morality, and "being in the right place at the right time" are all in place today at YTB.

I was on the fence for a couple of months, and one day I was invited to a travel party. I went to the Travel Party, and I won a trip and got started with the business.
Winning a trip, coming to a travel party and starting a home based business, all in one great night.

There are similar companies out there, but some of them wanted me to quit what I was doing and spend full time with them, this YTB company allows you to work at your pace and comfort zone and developed a blue print for success by "talking or showing" not "selling" the opportunity. You see, people naturally like to talk about travel and vacations.

With this business, I can work as hard, or little as I want and I still make money. You can make money several ways with YTB, that of a Referring Travel Agent (RTA) or and Independent Marketing representative (REP).

The travel booking engines are powered by Travelocity, who basically saw growth in this corporation and said " They would rather be in business with them than compete with them".

So come join us for some travel, some fun, and make money while doing it. With this business you can spend more time with your family, and friends.

Infrequent Fliers, Traveling with Kids

Jammed airports, delayed flights (on-time performance is the worst in a dozen years), missed connections, lost and mishandled bags (14,000 a day!) and families who rarely fly struggling to shepherd cranky kids through the crowds and long security lines.

Welcome to holiday air travel 2007. A third of holiday travelers -- millions of people -- AAA reports, fly just once or twice a year and aren't familiar with the ever-changing rules or the little tricks that can make air travel more bearable.

This column is devoted to all of you infrequent family fliers out there getting ready to travel on some of the busiest weeks of the year -- AAA says nearly 5 million of us will fly over the Thanksgiving holiday and another 9 million at Christmas -- so we can gather around crowded tables ("I thought once you're in high school you don't have to sit at the kids' table!") with annoying relatives ("You look like you've gained a little weight, dear...") and stuff ourselves with roasted turkey.

Let's not forget the thousands of kids affected by divorce who will be flying solo this holiday season to visit non-custodial parents. For an extra fee, younger children can be supervised by airline personnel (check your airline's Web site for specifics about unaccompanied minors), but teens often must fend for themselves, which is no easy task should they become stranded someplace because of a canceled flight.

I've spent more holidays than I can count on airplanes and at airports talking to other holiday travelers. Here's hoping that these 10 kid-tested holiday rules for air travel will help you get where you're going with a smile -- or at least without anyone in your gang having a public meltdown:

1. Book nonstop flights and those early in the day whenever possible, especially when flying with kids or sending kids as unaccompanied minors. Delays get worse as the day progresses. Consider smaller alternative airports, especially when flying in and out of New York City airports, where delays have been particularly bad. Check in online from home to save more time. Or, if you're driving to the airport, reserve a parking space through http://www.parknflynetwork.com/.

2. Got your quart-sized Ziploc? I always stash a couple of extras in my carry-on bag. While each passenger is limited to 3 ounce bottles of liquid and gels in one quart-sized zip-top bag, you can bring larger amounts of medication, baby formula and food, breast milk and juice. Make sure to have enough in case your flight is delayed or you miss a connection. You won't be able to buy formula or baby food at the airport. Just make sure to tell the security officers you have them. Check http://www.tsa.gov/ for the latest security rules.

3. Send ahead any must-haves -- gifts, the outfits for the family holiday pictures, skis, surfboards, etc. You can send via FedEx ground, UPS or one of the many services like http://www.luggageforward.com/, http://www.luggageconcierge.com/ or http://www.luggagefree.com/. It won't be nearly as expensive as having to get new gear if yours gets lost.

4. Invest in small rolling bags for each member of the gang -- even your 3 year old can roll hers. Always carry on medicine, a change of clothes for the baby (T-shirts for everyone else in case of spills and sweatshirts -- planes can be chilly).

5. Give yourself extra time to find a parking space at the airport and to get through security. Gone are the days when you will be bumped to the head of the line if you're checked in for your flight 20 minutes early. Also, take the kids to the bathroom before getting into the security line.

6. Buy a seat for your infant or toddler so that you can use your safety seat onboard. The FAA "strongly urges" their use. www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/. Babies are far safer restrained in their safety seats in turbulent skies. They're a lot more comfortable too in their familiar seats, which means you'll have a more comfortable flight too. See if your airline offers infant fares. Wheel your child up to the plane in his stroller and "gate check" it. The stroller will be waiting for you at the gate when you arrive. Check out the parent-invented device that allows you to wheel your car seat -- with your child in it -- through the airport (http://www.gogobabyz.com/).

7. Explain to your toddler and preschooler why they must allow the security officers to take a "picture" of their blankie, sippy cup or stuffed giraffe. Reward them for their cooperation.

8. Pack plenty of healthy food in your carry-on. Don't count on getting anything to eat onboard the plane. Airlines often run out of the sandwiches you can purchase in flight and you may not have time to buy anything before you board, or even find anything you want the kids to eat. Fill the kids' water bottles and sippy cups after you've gone through security.

9. Bring double or triple the diapers and entertainment you expect to need -- in case you are stuck on the tarmac or in an airport for hours. You won't be able to get any diapers at the airport or onboard the plane and you can't count on the movie (if there is one) being suitable for kids (unless, of course, you're lucky enough to be on a plane with an individual entertainment system.) Bring a laptop or invest in a portable DVD player -- they are less than $100 -- some holiday stories (it's the 50th anniversary of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas") and old-fashioned entertainment, including a deck of cards and a pad and paper. When was the last time you played cards or tic-tac-toe with your child? Check out the Websites http://www.familyonboard.com/ or http://www.madallie.com/ for other travel-sized toys and games.

10. Stay calm if you know you are going to miss your connection or worse, your flight is canceled. Make sure you've programmed the phone numbers for the airline and your favorite hotel chain into your cell phone and call as soon as you know your situation. Make sure teens know what to do if they're traveling alone and miss a connection (identify themselves immediately to a flight attendant and gate agent who can help. Call you so that you can talk to the gate agent rebooking their flights).

As for those of you who know the drill, be patient and kind to novice fliers. Santa will notice.

Experts hope extra airspace will ease travel woes

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Bad weather and an airport technical problem stalled Thanksgiving holiday travel on Monday -- and conditions are likely to worsen as Turkey Day nears.

At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, incoming and outgoing flights were halted when two control towers lost radio communications. The delays at the Texas airport consequently delayed flights in other cities across the country.

By midday, only incoming flights were delayed.

Weather was the culprit at other major airports, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
In Georgia, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport saw flights delayed up to an hour due to heavy fog. Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, also was shut down temporarily because of fog.

In the Northeast, high winds caused delays at Newark International Airport in New Jersey and LaGuardia Airport in New York.

Heavy cloud cover was blamed for delays at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania; and at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Runway maintenance stalled departures at San Francisco International Airport in California.
In Colorado, heavy snow was expected Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecasters said the snow could bring traffic and travel problems.

The same weather system could worsen travel conditions in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and the Texas panhandle.

The Transportation Security Administration on Monday launched a holiday travel public awareness effort. Called SimpliFLY, the program includes a one-minute video that shows travelers how to "pack smart to get through security faster," the TSA said.

"Our goal is to get passengers through the checkpoint as quickly as possible while maintaining aviation security. The public can partner with us to accomplish this by coming prepared," said TSA

Experts hope extra airspace will ease travel woes

(CNN) -- Planes crisscrossing the East Coast will have access to military airspace Wednesday afternoon, a handy accommodation as fog and winter weather threaten to make one of the busiest travel days of the year even more tedious.

Thousands of miles of airspace usually reserved for the military will become available to commercial airliners at 4 p.m. ET, but it will be up to the Federal Aviation Administration to decide whether to use it.

President Bush last week ordered the airspace be made available. The FAA will have the option to use it through Sunday night.

David Castelveter, spokesman for the Air Transport Association, the interest group representing major carriers in Washington, said the airspace will be available for planes flying between Florida and Maine.

The airspace could be especially helpful if the National Weather Service warnings hold true, Castelveter said.

Holiday Travel Tips for Stress-Free Flying

Holiday fliers know the trepidation of travel on some of the year's busiest dates. But with expert advice flying doesn't have to dampen the seasonal spirit.

"Be prepared and be patient," said Kathy Sudeikis, president of the Alexandria, Virginia-based American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). "Prepared means that you anticipate delays, so you've charged the iPod, you have batteries for the GameBoys, your cell phone is not going to die because you're ready for an airport crisis."

"Bring plenty of reading material," she added. "A brand new book is always a good thing."

When young children are traveling, parents need to plan for novelty and variety. "You need to be sure that you're bringing something new for both directions of the flight,"

Sudeikis said. "It doesn't have to be expensive—maybe a new coloring book and crayon. But you've got to surprise them, and it's good if it's not something that they do all the time."
Sudeikis also suggests that travel is a poor time to halt the holiday feeding frenzy.

"Have some snacks, because if delays get really long, [airports or airlines] can run out of food," she said. "You need to have food for kids. They are even harder to please than adults."
Holiday hosts can also feel the crunch when they are responsible for retrieving out-of-towners at the airport.

"Depending on how far you live from the airport, don't even leave home till you hear from them on the cell phone that they've touched down," Sudeikis advised. "That gives you a good half hour to get there by the time they get everyone off the plane, get their luggage, and make it down the concourse."

Savvy Travelers May Avoid Holiday Delays

Of course, travel delays are best avoided before they happen. Savvy travelers can mitigate problems while making their travel plans.

Nonstop flights are a boon, because connections increase the risk of a delay. Traveling earlier in the day can also help avert holiday disasters. Statistics show that flights scheduled earlier in the day have better on-time performance. If problems do arise, an early flight offers flyers a better chance to rebook on an alternate flight.

Many airlines now allow travelers to check themselves in at home via the Web and arrive with boarding pass in hand—avoiding lines. Some airlines impose baggage restrictions over the holidays, so knowing relevant limits is important. Gifts are best shipped ahead to your final destination. If they do fly with you, your carefully chosen packages may be opened by a screener—so leave them unwrapped. Collapsible gift bags offer a convenient "on arrival" wrapping option.

If winter sports are part of your holiday plans, place skis, ski poles, and ice skates in checked luggage. Ski boots can travel as carry-on baggage. See the U.S. Transportation Safety Authority's (TSA) full list of "special items." One key to evading holiday crowds is to travel when others aren't. It's sometimes easier said than done, but peak travel times should be avoided. And those peak times aren't the same everywhere.

"Certain times are better to travel than others, but it really varies by airport," said TSA spokesman Darrin Kayser from the TSA's Arlington, Virginia, headquarters. "We joke that if you've seen one airport you've seen one airport."

The TSA Web site lists historical data for individual airport security checkpoint wait times, so that travelers can choose less hectic travel schedules.

In general, the busiest travel days are those immediately before and after the actual holidays, so it's best to travel at least two days before or after Christmas and New Year's Day.
Avoiding Security Snafus

Knowledge of security procedures can speed the system and ease your delays and frustration. The time to find out is before travel.

"We recognize that there's a role that [the TSA] can play, and that's fully staffing the lanes, having our screeners work overtime, and just putting in that extra effort," Kayser said. "But there's also a role that passengers can play. That's why we recommend that they go to our Web site and look at the prohibited items list and check out our travel tips, so that they can be fully prepared to fly."

Unloaded firearms are allowed only as checked baggage when secured in a locked, hard-sided container. Ammunition or firearm parts are also banned from carry-on baggage, and all such items must be declared to the airline. Sound like common knowledge? Think again.
"In October we had over 2,000 instances of ammunition at the checkpoints and 77 firearms at the checkpoints," Kayser said. "These are serious incidents, and they slow the lines. My number one piece of advice is to make sure that prohibited items aren't in your bags."

Kayser and TSA also offer the following security tips:

• Pack valuables and fragile items, like laptops or jewelry, in your carry-on bag.

• Avoid overstuffing checked luggage, which can be more difficult and time-consuming to search.
• Try to carry fewer metallic items, including keys, coins, phones, et cetera, in your carry-on bag. Remove laptops and video cameras from their cases so they can be placed in a plastic bin for screening.

• Remove your overcoat, as well as your jacket, blazer, and suit coat. Sweaters and sweatshirts are OK if not unusually bulky.

• Consider wearing flip-flops, sandals, or other nonmetallic and easily removable footwear that won't raise suspicions. Johnston & Murphy, Florsheim, Rockport, and other shoemakers market "airport friendly" shoes that are free of metal shanks.

Kayser reports that peak wait times at checkpoints over the Thanksgiving holidays, some of the year's busiest travel days, rarely (only 3 percent of the time) exceeded 12 minutes—despite traveler numbers that exceeded any since September 11, 2001.

But due to weather or other issues, even the most prepared traveler may experience a holiday debacle out of his or her control. That's when they most need a very important travel tool.

"Patience is the other thing that you have to pack," Sudeikis advised. "You can't get there any faster by getting upset."

Top 10 Thanksgiving Destinations

Bring your family along for the fun and enjoy a Thanksgiving weekend getaway. You'll be thankful you did!

Sure, we cover the obvious—after all, no list would be complete without a nod to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or the site of the 1620 Pilgrim landing—but we also favor less traditional destinations, from lush islands and beach spots to desert landscapes and ski slopes. Plus, with fares so low to Europe at this time of year, we'd be remiss not to pick at least one European capital; our preferred city is known for its terrific beer and French fries, although you'll be hard-pressed to find football on television (American football, that is). We've even recommended a jaunt on the high seas, since we figure there's no better tribute to the adventuresome spirit of the Pilgrim pioneers than by making your own transatlantic trek; bring your family along for the fun and enjoy the best of Thanksgiving!

1. Aruba Granted, there's not much of a connection between Thanksgiving and this Dutch-owned Caribbean isle, but it's certain that giving thanks for all of life's little pleasures is made infinitely more effortless when kicking back near the turquoise waters of this tropical paradise. Boasting glorious weather nearly year-round (Aruba is safely situated south of the tropical-storm belt), basking on the powdery, white-sand beaches needn't be interrupted, unless, of course the activities of this tiny 20-mile-long island should lure you away. Water sports abound, as do opportunities to explore surreal desert island landscapes where cacti and iguanas compose an exotic landscape—head out on foot, Jeep, or by ATV. All-inclusive, luxurious resorts line the shores, diverse culinary fare is served up in numerous restaurants, and superb shopping opportunities abound. Casinos, bars, clubs, and assorted evening extravaganzas animate the night, while glorious sunrises give an incentive to party until dawn.

2. Brussels Sure, you could be content scarfing down your traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all its trimmings, from turkey to Brussels sprouts, or you could sprout a plan for something a little bit different this year and actually head off to Brussels instead. With just over seven hours of flight time between the Belgian capital and the East Coast, Brussels makes for a feasible long-weekend getaway. Plus, this gastronomic paradise assures you needn't forgo the feasting—just trade in the turkey and eggnog for moules-frites (mussels and French fries) and any one of several hundred delectably brewed Belgian beers instead. Or, give in to the whims of tradition and hunt down one of the restaurants where many ex-pats gather for the holiday—the American Club of Brussels, for one, hosts an annual Thanksgiving dinner. Best of all, when you're not chowing down, you can explore a charming city of cobbled streets and historic squares drenched in European tradition—with the magnificent Grand Place as its focal point and dozens of unique museums, you'll be giving thanks for treating yourself to the trip.

3. Kauai If you're hankering to leave the shores of the continental U.S. this Thanksgiving, but are craving traditional Americana on Turkey Day, there's no finer option than the Aloha State. We recommend spectacular Kauai, a dramatically landscaped isle surrounded by glimmering Pacific waters. The oldest inhabited island in Hawaii, it's no wonder people first settled down here—and opted never to leave. Every inch of Kauai seems to reflect some new and fascinating wonder of nature—be it the remote Na Pali Coast, where majestic cliffs preside over the sea; the central jagged mountain region with its verdant rainforests; the breathtaking grandeur of Waimea Canyon; or the seemingly endless miles of golden sandy beaches. And while much of the rest of the U.S. is watching leaves drop to the ground with the onset of winter, Kauai remains as lush and green as you've ever seen—a most rewarding holiday getaway in every way.

4. Los Cabos Whether it be fishing, golfing, a spa retreat, or lazy beach-bumming days, a Thanksgiving getaway to Los Cabos sure beats the usual family banter around the dining table. Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos is composed of two very different towns: Cabo San Lucas, described by some as a glorified Los Angeles-style resort, and San Jose del Cabo, a traditional Mexican village. Whichever you fancy, both come complete with haute-style resorts and spas, world-class dining, and plenty of golden beaches. Fishing and golf are also major draws here, and an array of championship courses will easily tempt you away from watching afternoon football. Plus, you'll be able to forgo the usual game-watching diet of beer and chips and treat yourself to margaritas and tacos instead!

5. New York For the biggest Thanksgiving event in the country, head to New York City for its annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. At 9 a.m. each Turkey Day, over 10,000 Macy employees and volunteers meet at 77th and Central Park West to begin their march down Broadway. It's a fantastical procession filled with colorful floats, marching bands, and at least a dozen giant helium balloons—to the delight of the 2.5 million spectators who come out to watch from the sidelines. If you're at home basting the turkey instead, stay tuned to the spectacle on television; this is one American pageant that's bound to please.

6. Phoenix & ScottsdaleThanksgiving celebrates a legendary dinner between Pilgrims and Indians—why not tip your hat to America's original inhabitants this Thanksgiving and head to Arizona, where the ubiquitous presence of ruins and reservations holds living tribute to the nation's Native American past. Lively Phoenix makes for a good home base, boasting such jewels as the Heard Museum, housing a wonderful Native American art and archaeology collection that highlights works by indigenous peoples of the Southwest—Navajos, Hopis, and Apaches—many of whom still reside on nearby reservations. It's also a great base to head out on a local road trip along the legendary Apache Trail, a 48-mile-long route marked by breathtaking scenery, ghost towns, and ancient Indian ruins. Meanwhile, the posh resort city of neighboring Scottsdale offers such diversions as Western-themed Old Town Scottsdale, a good spot to pick up turquoise jewelry and Navajo rugs. Even the local "pamper-me" spa culture reflects the area's Native American heritage and desert setting; get smothered in an adobe clay body mask or exfoliated with a cactus and aloe moisturizer at an area spa.

7. Plymouth Celebrate the first Thanksgiving, Pilgrim-style, in Plymouth, Mass., where Mayflower passengers famously disembarked back in 1620. After visiting their supposed landing site, at Plymouth Rock, pay your respects to the statue of native Wampanoag chief Massasoit, who signed an accord with the Pilgrims in 1621; what few members remain of his tribe today can be found living across the water, on Martha's Vineyard. These two sites aside, the area's biggest draw at this time of year is Plimoth Plantation, a sizable estate that re-creates the 17th-century Pilgrim village that once stood here, complete with timber houses, barn and livestock, as well as a replica of the Mayflower itself. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more historic spot to spend the holiday.

8. Transatlantic Cruise You'll need your sea legs to follow in the Pilgrims' footsteps this Thanksgiving! We propose re-enacting the seafaring adventure that those adventurous pioneers set out on nearly 400 years ago aboard the legendary Mayflower. Happily, you can experience the exhilaration of crossing the Atlantic without having to rough it as the poor Pilgrims surely did—we've discovered that one of the most luxurious cruise lines on the high seas offers six-night transatlantic crossings during Thanksgiving week. Cunard Line's lavish Queen Mary 2, the largest and one of the newest cruise ships in the world, whisks travelers from Southampton, England, to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.—a little off path from the original course between Plymouth, England, and Plymouth, Mass., but a fitting tribute all the same.

9. Denver "The mile high city" deliver "high times". Ski bums the world over are hoping for another year of spectacular snow conditions. This means snow bunnies can hit the slopes to work off those extra Turkey-day carbs. With over 2300 acres of terrain available, including superb back bowls, you'll have plenty of wide stretches and untouched trails to schuss on. Besides the exciting mountain possibilities, the picturesque snow-covered town also offers notable restaurants, lodgings, and fashionable boutiques to charm you off the pistes as well. One of America's favorite winter retreats doesn't come cheap, mind you, but you can capitalize on season-starter lift packages that will save you a few bucks to use towards your holiday shopping.

10. Vieques This tiny U.S.-affiliated island paradise is as close as you'll get to uncharted territory in the Caribbean—it only recently opened to tourism after serving for decades as a U.S. military base—and its proximity to the East Coast (eg., it's only four hours from New York plus a short flight or ferry ride from Fajardo, Puerto Rico) makes it ideal for a long-weekend beach getaway. Known for its virtually unspoiled sands, this 21-mile-long isle six miles off the coast of Puerto Rico isn't your average Caribbean hotspot, so don't come expecting high-rise hotels, luxury complexes, or shopping centers—instead, the island caters to sophisticated, eco-minded tourists with small boutique hotels, the Caribbean's largest wildlife refuge, and about 42 miles of pristine beach. Visit before everyone else discovers it—and be thankful for the experience.

Carnival Announces Fuel Supplement Charge

The North American brands of Carnival Corporation & plc have announced they will implement a fuel supplement of $5 per person per day as a result of the continued rapid escalation of fuel prices.

The fuel supplement, which only applies to the first and second guests in a stateroom and will not exceed $70 per person per cruise, is effective on all bookings departing on or after Feb. 1, 2008 on Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and The Yachts of Seabourn.

For existing reservations, travel agents will receive $10 per booking in administrative compensation for notifying their clients of the new fuel supplement and collecting the additional funds.

Carnival Corporation & plc brands will provide additional information on the fuel supplement via their respective Web sites, as well as through various marketing and collateral materials.

According to Carnival Corporation & plc chairman and CEO Micky Arison, the price the company pays for fuel has increased 140% over the last three years, with a 50% increase occurring in the last seven months.

"Earlier this year, we implemented a supplement for our European brands. We had hoped to avoid a similar supplement for our North American brands but with the price of oil approaching $100 a barrel this is no longer possible," he said.

"The implementation of the fuel supplement beginning Feb. 1 for our North American brands will result in consumers paying approximately one-third of our year-over-year fuel cost increases over the first six months of the fiscal year," he added.

"We are hopeful fuel prices will someday return to a level that will enable us to eliminate this supplement," Arison continued. "Until then, we believe that guests sailing on our North American brands will understand the dilemma that soaring fuel prices have caused for our company and industry and that a fuel supplement was needed to enable us to continue offering the high quality cruises our guests have come to expect."

When asked if they would match the Carnival charge, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said, "It is one of many issues we discuss and consider on a regular basis," while a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said that the line "hasn't made any statements yet about this, and I am uncertain were they stand on fuel surcharges."

Airlines: Record Number of Flyers for Thanksgiving Holiday

According to an Air Transportation Association release, airlines are expecting to board a record number of passengers for the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday. Four percent more passengers are expected to travel over the holiday period than last year. Aircraft, on average, are expected to fly about 90% full.

Air Transportation Association president and CEO James C. May gave the perennial advice: “to plan ahead and arrive at the airport plenty early.”

In the release the Air Transportation Association offered the following tips for holiday travelers:

  • Travel with a current government-issued photo identification

  • Allow plenty of time for checking in and for security screening at the airport. If you are traveling on the busiest days, plan for longer-than-usual security lines

  • Medications taken on a regular basis should be carried with you onboard

  • If carrying any liquids or gels in carry-on baggage, they must be in containers of three ounces or less. Pack them in a one-quart zip-top bag and place it separately in a security bin for screening. Only one zip-top bag is allowed per passenger, so what doesn’t fit must be packed in checked luggage. Note that larger quantities of medications and baby formula can be carried onboard

  • Although now permitted, we recommend that you leave lighters at home. Matches are not permitted. Become familiar with the list of TSA permitted and prohibited items and under what circumstance permitted items may be carried onboard

  • Before arriving at the security checkpoint, place all metallic objects (e.g., loose change, keys, pens, cell phone, watch, camera) in carry-on baggage

  • Make sure that each bag is tagged with traveler name and contact information, both on the inside and outside, and remove all destination baggage tags from previous trips

Avoid Sickness In Paradise: Prevent Jet Lag

One of the worst parts of air travel is handling jet lag. Jet lag is basically your body’s inability to adjust to the destination’s time as it passes through multiple time zones. For the inexperienced traveler (and some experienced ones) it can put a cramp in your business or holiday plans especially if your trip is only a few days.

The main symptoms of jet lag are fatigue and tiredness. This can be accompanied by headaches, dizziness, muscle soreness, a feeling of sickness and odd eating patterns. Being tired while on your holiday, especially if you’re planning on doing a lot of sightseeing or physical activity can make if difficult to have an enjoyable time.

To prevent jet lag you have to start before your trip. Ensure you are relaxed and stress free before you leave for the airport. Don’t drink caffeinated drinks and while alcohol may relax you it also dehydrates which can contribute to jet lag. Also consider doing some light exercise such as yoga or running but nothing that will make your muscles sore. Exercising aids your body’s sleep patterns.

Once on your flight, try to make yourself as comfortable as possible. Consider accessories that will help you such as neck pillows and eye masks. Take off your shoes and get pillows and blankets before the plane takes off. Since dehydration contributes to jet lag, bring a large bottle of water. Drink lots of water even if you don’t feel thirsty.

After take off, set your watch to the destination time. The rule of thumb is to sleep if it’s bed time at your destination and stay awake (or just take a small nap) if not. If you need to sleep consider taking a light sleep aid and if you’re worried about missing the meal service then just let the cabin crew know to wake you. Again, avoid consuming alcohol. It may help you sleep but in the long run it will make jet lag worse. If you feel like a drink then just have one and drink extra water to keep hydrated. If you’re awake, get out of your seat and do some simple stretches to reduce muscle tension.

Some travelers swear by Melatonin pills to prevent jet lag. Tests show that your body’s clock is influenced by the hormone Melatonin. It is secreted when your body is exposed to a lack of light so when it’s dark it’s like a natural sleeping pill. You can force this hormone by taking Melatonin pills which can be purchased over the counter at most drug stores.

Once you arrive at your destination adjust to the time as soon as possible. If you are tired in the middle of the day don’t crash but take a small nap and then get to bed early. Sleeping during the middle of the day and staying awake at night will only prolong jet lag.

If you use these preventative tips you will arrive at your destination rested with minimal jet lag and ready to enjoy your trip.

Fly Fishing the Muskegon River

Anglers love nothing better than to fight a winter steelhead on Michigan’s Muskegon River in Newaygo. These powerful fish are known as hot chrome torpedoes and can weigh as much as 20 pounds. Just having one on your line is the thrill of a lifetime and most of Michigan’s steelheads are wild steels.

The steelhead migration season begins at the end of October, after the Chinook are finished spawning. Peak months for fishing steelhead are November and December when the fish being their spawning migration. These beauties end the migration near the end of February and into early March.

The best place to fish for chrome torpedoes, the Muskegon River in Newaygo is perfect for fly fishing in early spring and late fall.

Floats and Spawns

If you’re looking for a fast-paced steelhead fishing technique, try fishing floats and spawns. This allows for many hook-ups and a large number of the steelheads will be landed. It’s best to use a longer rod because it gives you a stronger hook-set and a longer drift. Your reel should be a center pin reel that’s been wound with 10 pound test hi-vis line. This will allow for longer casts and smooth drag for your fight with a large steelhead.

When using floats for steelhead in the Muskegon River, they will vary greatly because of water conditions and water levels. The best floats to use for Muskegon River steelheads are Thill orange and black steelhead floats.

Winter Steelhead Fishing

For steelhead fishing in the Muskegon River during November and December, use either a 10’ 8wt fly rod or a 9’6” 8wt fly rod. This allows you to recognize a steelhead pick-up because of the longer drift. Also beneficial is the fact that these longer rods allow for a better presentation, a better mending and they tend to keep your line off of the water’s surface.

Steelhead Flies

The best steelhead flies for use in the Muskegon River is a wide variety of small egg flies. Always use natural colors such as cream, Oregon cheese, steelhead orange and golden.

Steelhead feed in the Muskegon River in fall and are extremely aggressive. They eat almost anything that passes near to them at this time of year. Wooly buggers and egg patterns work best in fall and early winter, as well as wet flies and spey.

If you’re fishing on the Muskegon River in late winter and early spring, use small nymphs and egg patterns with a light leader. This is the time when steelheads are less aggressive. They don’t chase flies like they do in the fall.

In late spring, steelheads become more aggressive, but are particular about what they hit. This is the time to use light leaders and small nymphs. Steelheads enter the Muskegon River for the coming spawn on the gravel runs.

The best way to fish for steelhead on the Muskegon River is by boat. This allows you to reach runs and pools that can’t be accessed by wading, though steelhead can be caught by this method. A good place to wade for steelhead is at the Thornapple Avenue launch in Newaygo, which is not far below the Croton dam.

The mighty Muskegon River provides a great opportunity for steelhead anglers because of the large runs of steelhead found there. If you’re looking for a unique steelhead fishing experience, head for the beautiful Muskegon River in Newaygo. You won’t be sorry.
