AMR to divest its regional airline

TOOLS.DALLAS — The parent of American Airlines said Wednesday it plans to sell or spin off its American Eagle regional carrier next year. Its shares rose more than 7 percent.
Investors have been pressing AMR Corp. to sell the regional airline and other assets, moves they say could raise money and lift AMR's stock price.
American Airlines is the nation's biggest airline. The industry has been under pressure from record fuel prices. But AMR has posted six straight profitable quarters as planes were more full and passengers paid higher average fares.
Ray Neidl, an analyst with Calyon Securities, said it was too early to put a price tag on American Eagle.
American Eagle operates regional jets that connect American Airlines hubs such as Dallas-Fort Worth with smaller cities. It has about 300 planes and operates about 1,700 daily flights to more than 150 cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It generates annual revenue of about $2.3 billion.
Fort Worth-based AMR said in a statement that it is still studying whether to spin off Eagle to AMR shareholders, sell to a third party or divest the carrier in some other way. Although planned for 2008, the timing of the divestiture could be affected by economic, industry and financial-market conditions, the company said.
AMR said divesting Eagle "is in the best interests of AMR and its shareholders." AMR said the move would also give Eagle the chance to win new business and provide new opportunities for its employees.
Shares of AMR jumped $1.52, or 7.4 percent, to $22.08 in afternoon trading Wednesday after briefly trading as high as $22.66. The shares had lost half their value since late January and are still near their 52-week low of $19.
"The decision comes after a careful and deliberate evaluation of the strategy that will best enable us to continue to create value for our shareholders," AMR Chairman and Chief Executive Gerard Arpey said in a statement.
Arpey said the company had built Eagle to be "fully capable of standing on its own and is well-positioned to pursue growth opportunities outside of the AMR corporate structure."
The divestiture would also include Eagle's Executive Airlines Inc. affiliate, which operates American Eagle flights in the Bahamas and the Caribbean from bases in Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Calyon Securities's Neidel said the divestiture would help AMR shareholders.
"This is one asset that probably should be spun off," Neidl said. "It can be operated more cost-effectively as an independent business." He said new owners might be able to reduce pilot costs.
Shareholders have been pressing the company to sell assets such as Eagle, the AAdvantage frequent-flier program, and its investment-management arm. They have said the stock market undervalues those businesses and AMR would be better off selling them.
The most vocal of these investors has been FL Group, an investment fund based in Iceland that holds about 9 percent of AMR stock. The fund argued that AMR management was moving too slowly on divestitures, and he began contacting AMR directors.
A spokesman for FL Group, Halldor Kristmannsson, said the fund couldn't give a detailed reaction to Wednesday's announcement yet but "we welcome any initiative that looks to enhance shareholder value."
As recently as July, Arpey said AMR was not convinced that selling those side businesses would help shareholders. AMR officials also noted that AAdvantage was closely intertwined with American Airlines and that selling the frequent-flier program could have unintended consequences for the core airline.

Egypt Resorts and Attractions

About 30 years ago Hurghada was just a simple fishing village. But now, with it's a resort with crystal clear water, untouched reefs. It has become one of the best Egyptian tourist destinations. A significant part of its fame Hurghada gained as one of the best diving centers of the world. Like all oriental cities Hurghada make living out of trade, so if when you walk along the city, be ready to beat off the pressing offers of the sellers, deserving to make you buy their souvenirs. There are some more entertainments except shopping and diving in Hurghada. You can make a jeep trip to a desert, visit Bedouin’s village there; you can see corals and some natural preserves. Hurghada is also has aqua-park. Fishing is one of the popular tourist’s activities in Hurghada too. Today, Hurghada is known as a party town, particularly among Europeans. Locals and others will tell you that life begins at night in Hurghada, with the many, many clubs.
The best time to visit Hurghada is October-November. In winter there are strong winds and it becomes dark very early.
When you are in Hurghada don’t miss the chance to see one of the most outstanding monuments of Egypt history – Luxor and the Valley of the King. Pharaoh’s tombs and ancient temples are worth visiting.
Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the most accessible and developed tourist resort communities on the Sinai Peninsula. All around are Bedouins, colorful tents, mountains and sea. Na'ama Beach is one of the centers of the tourist activities. Located just north of Sharm, this area is developing into a resort town of its own. For those who like shopping, the Sharm El-Sheikh mall provides shops with both foreign and local products, including jewelry, leather goods, clothing, pottery and books. Nobody leaves Sharm el-Sheikh without several useless but very pleasant souvenirs. Like Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh is famous for diving too, but it has more diversity in corals.
Those, who choose Sharm el-Sheikh also has opportunity to watch the attraction of Sinai peninsula - The Monastery of St Catherine, Mount Sinai (or Mountain of Moses), Pharaoh's Island and Salah El Din Citadel, Nabq National Park, Ras Abu Galum National Park and so-called 'Coloured Canyon'.
The last but not the least of the Egypt must-sees is Cairo with its pyramids. From either Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh it will be a long trip, but you will never regret it!
When going to Egypt, be aware that 3-star hotels in Egypt have nothing to do with 3-star hotels in Europe. So, it’s better to choose 4 or 5 star hotel. Probably it saves you from many inconveniences. Often, the large hotels have zoos, playgrounds, discos, bars, a number of pools and even small theaters. So, may be you will to want to leave your hotel.
Anyway, a trip to Egypt promises to be exotic and interesting experience. by: Constance Blair

Infrequent Fliers, Traveling with Kids

Welcome to holiday air travel 2007. A third of holiday travelers -- millions of people -- AAA reports, fly just once or twice a year and aren't familiar with the ever-changing rules or the little tricks that can make air travel more bearable.
This column is devoted to all of you infrequent family fliers out there getting ready to travel on some of the busiest weeks of the year -- AAA says nearly 5 million of us will fly over the Thanksgiving holiday and another 9 million at Christmas -- so we can gather around crowded tables ("I thought once you're in high school you don't have to sit at the kids' table!") with annoying relatives ("You look like you've gained a little weight, dear...") and stuff ourselves with roasted turkey.
Let's not forget the thousands of kids affected by divorce who will be flying solo this holiday season to visit non-custodial parents. For an extra fee, younger children can be supervised by airline personnel (check your airline's Web site for specifics about unaccompanied minors), but teens often must fend for themselves, which is no easy task should they become stranded someplace because of a canceled flight.
I've spent more holidays than I can count on airplanes and at airports talking to other holiday travelers. Here's hoping that these 10 kid-tested holiday rules for air travel will help you get where you're going with a smile -- or at least without anyone in your gang having a public meltdown:
1. Book nonstop flights and those early in the day whenever possible, especially when flying with kids or sending kids as unaccompanied minors. Delays get worse as the day progresses. Consider smaller alternative airports, especially when flying in and out of New York City airports, where delays have been particularly bad. Check in online from home to save more time. Or, if you're driving to the airport, reserve a parking space through http://www.parknflynetwork.com/.
2. Got your quart-sized Ziploc? I always stash a couple of extras in my carry-on bag. While each passenger is limited to 3 ounce bottles of liquid and gels in one quart-sized zip-top bag, you can bring larger amounts of medication, baby formula and food, breast milk and juice. Make sure to have enough in case your flight is delayed or you miss a connection. You won't be able to buy formula or baby food at the airport. Just make sure to tell the security officers you have them. Check http://www.tsa.gov/ for the latest security rules.
3. Send ahead any must-haves -- gifts, the outfits for the family holiday pictures, skis, surfboards, etc. You can send via FedEx ground, UPS or one of the many services like http://www.luggageforward.com/, http://www.luggageconcierge.com/ or http://www.luggagefree.com/. It won't be nearly as expensive as having to get new gear if yours gets lost.
4. Invest in small rolling bags for each member of the gang -- even your 3 year old can roll hers. Always carry on medicine, a change of clothes for the baby (T-shirts for everyone else in case of spills and sweatshirts -- planes can be chilly).
5. Give yourself extra time to find a parking space at the airport and to get through security. Gone are the days when you will be bumped to the head of the line if you're checked in for your flight 20 minutes early. Also, take the kids to the bathroom before getting into the security line.
7. Explain to your toddler and preschooler why they must allow the security officers to take a "picture" of their blankie, sippy cup or stuffed giraffe. Reward them for their cooperation.
8. Pack plenty of healthy food in your carry-on. Don't count on getting anything to eat onboard the plane. Airlines often run out of the sandwiches you can purchase in flight and you may not have time to buy anything before you board, or even find anything you want the kids to eat. Fill the kids' water bottles and sippy cups after you've gone through security.
9. Bring double or triple the diapers and entertainment you expect to need -- in case you are stuck on the tarmac or in an airport for hours. You won't be able to get any diapers at the airport or onboard the plane and you can't count on the movie (if there is one) being suitable for kids (unless, of course, you're lucky enough to be on a plane with an individual entertainment system.) Bring a laptop or invest in a portable DVD player -- they are less than $100 -- some holiday stories (it's the 50th anniversary of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas") and old-fashioned entertainment, including a deck of cards and a pad and paper. When was the last time you played cards or tic-tac-toe with your child? Check out the Websites http://www.familyonboard.com/ or http://www.madallie.com/ for other travel-sized toys and games.
10. Stay calm if you know you are going to miss your connection or worse, your flight is canceled. Make sure you've programmed the phone numbers for the airline and your favorite hotel chain into your cell phone and call as soon as you know your situation. Make sure teens know what to do if they're traveling alone and miss a connection (identify themselves immediately to a flight attendant and gate agent who can help. Call you so that you can talk to the gate agent rebooking their flights).
As for those of you who know the drill, be patient and kind to novice fliers. Santa will notice.
Experts hope extra airspace will ease travel woes

By midday, only incoming flights were delayed.
Weather was the culprit at other major airports, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
In Georgia, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport saw flights delayed up to an hour due to heavy fog. Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, also was shut down temporarily because of fog.
In the Northeast, high winds caused delays at Newark International Airport in New Jersey and LaGuardia Airport in New York.
Heavy cloud cover was blamed for delays at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania; and at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Runway maintenance stalled departures at San Francisco International Airport in California.
In Colorado, heavy snow was expected Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecasters said the snow could bring traffic and travel problems.
The same weather system could worsen travel conditions in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and the Texas panhandle.
"Our goal is to get passengers through the checkpoint as quickly as possible while maintaining aviation security. The public can partner with us to accomplish this by coming prepared," said TSA
Experts hope extra airspace will ease travel woes

President Bush last week ordered the airspace be made available. The FAA will have the option to use it through Sunday night.
David Castelveter, spokesman for the Air Transport Association, the interest group representing major carriers in Washington, said the airspace will be available for planes flying between Florida and Maine.
The airspace could be especially helpful if the National Weather Service warnings hold true, Castelveter said.

Holiday Travel Tips for Stress-Free Flying

"Be prepared and be patient," said Kathy Sudeikis, president of the Alexandria, Virginia-based American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). "Prepared means that you anticipate delays, so you've charged the iPod, you have batteries for the GameBoys, your cell phone is not going to die because you're ready for an airport crisis."
"Bring plenty of reading material," she added. "A brand new book is always a good thing."
When young children are traveling, parents need to plan for novelty and variety. "You need to be sure that you're bringing something new for both directions of the flight,"
Sudeikis also suggests that travel is a poor time to halt the holiday feeding frenzy.
"Have some snacks, because if delays get really long, [airports or airlines] can run out of food," she said. "You need to have food for kids. They are even harder to please than adults."
Holiday hosts can also feel the crunch when they are responsible for retrieving out-of-towners at the airport.
"Depending on how far you live from the airport, don't even leave home till you hear from them on the cell phone that they've touched down," Sudeikis advised. "That gives you a good half hour to get there by the time they get everyone off the plane, get their luggage, and make it down the concourse."
Savvy Travelers May Avoid Holiday Delays
Nonstop flights are a boon, because connections increase the risk of a delay. Traveling earlier in the day can also help avert holiday disasters. Statistics show that flights scheduled earlier in the day have better on-time performance. If problems do arise, an early flight offers flyers a better chance to rebook on an alternate flight.
Many airlines now allow travelers to check themselves in at home via the Web and arrive with boarding pass in hand—avoiding lines. Some airlines impose baggage restrictions over the holidays, so knowing relevant limits is important. Gifts are best shipped ahead to your final destination. If they do fly with you, your carefully chosen packages may be opened by a screener—so leave them unwrapped. Collapsible gift bags offer a convenient "on arrival" wrapping option.
The TSA Web site lists historical data for individual airport security checkpoint wait times, so that travelers can choose less hectic travel schedules.
Avoiding Security Snafus
"In October we had over 2,000 instances of ammunition at the checkpoints and 77 firearms at the checkpoints," Kayser said. "These are serious incidents, and they slow the lines. My number one piece of advice is to make sure that prohibited items aren't in your bags."
• Pack valuables and fragile items, like laptops or jewelry, in your carry-on bag.
• Avoid overstuffing checked luggage, which can be more difficult and time-consuming to search.
• Try to carry fewer metallic items, including keys, coins, phones, et cetera, in your carry-on bag. Remove laptops and video cameras from their cases so they can be placed in a plastic bin for screening.
• Remove your overcoat, as well as your jacket, blazer, and suit coat. Sweaters and sweatshirts are OK if not unusually bulky.
• Consider wearing flip-flops, sandals, or other nonmetallic and easily removable footwear that won't raise suspicions. Johnston & Murphy, Florsheim, Rockport, and other shoemakers market "airport friendly" shoes that are free of metal shanks.
Kayser reports that peak wait times at checkpoints over the Thanksgiving holidays, some of the year's busiest travel days, rarely (only 3 percent of the time) exceeded 12 minutes—despite traveler numbers that exceeded any since September 11, 2001.
But due to weather or other issues, even the most prepared traveler may experience a holiday debacle out of his or her control. That's when they most need a very important travel tool.
"Patience is the other thing that you have to pack," Sudeikis advised. "You can't get there any faster by getting upset."
Great Holiday Gift Ideas

When you can't be there in person, what better way to send your thoughts than this bountiful fruit basket? Wicker basket with handle arrives filled with fresh apples, grapes and bananas, along with cheese and crackers. (Substitution of contents may occur if unavailable)
Top 10 Thanksgiving Destinations

5. New York For the biggest Thanksgiving event in the country, head to New York City for its annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. At 9 a.m. each Turkey Day, over 10,000 Macy employees and volunteers meet at 77th and Central Park West to begin their march down Broadway. It's a fantastical procession filled with colorful floats, marching bands, and at least a dozen giant helium balloons—to the delight of the 2.5 million spectators who come out to watch from the sidelines. If you're at home basting the turkey instead, stay tuned to the spectacle on television; this is one American pageant that's bound to please.

Carnival Announces Fuel Supplement Charge

The fuel supplement, which only applies to the first and second guests in a stateroom and will not exceed $70 per person per cruise, is effective on all bookings departing on or after Feb. 1, 2008 on Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and The Yachts of Seabourn.
For existing reservations, travel agents will receive $10 per booking in administrative compensation for notifying their clients of the new fuel supplement and collecting the additional funds.
Carnival Corporation & plc brands will provide additional information on the fuel supplement via their respective Web sites, as well as through various marketing and collateral materials.
According to Carnival Corporation & plc chairman and CEO Micky Arison, the price the company pays for fuel has increased 140% over the last three years, with a 50% increase occurring in the last seven months.
"Earlier this year, we implemented a supplement for our European brands. We had hoped to avoid a similar supplement for our North American brands but with the price of oil approaching $100 a barrel this is no longer possible," he said.
"The implementation of the fuel supplement beginning Feb. 1 for our North American brands will result in consumers paying approximately one-third of our year-over-year fuel cost increases over the first six months of the fiscal year," he added.
"We are hopeful fuel prices will someday return to a level that will enable us to eliminate this supplement," Arison continued. "Until then, we believe that guests sailing on our North American brands will understand the dilemma that soaring fuel prices have caused for our company and industry and that a fuel supplement was needed to enable us to continue offering the high quality cruises our guests have come to expect."
When asked if they would match the Carnival charge, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said, "It is one of many issues we discuss and consider on a regular basis," while a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said that the line "hasn't made any statements yet about this, and I am uncertain were they stand on fuel surcharges."
Airlines: Record Number of Flyers for Thanksgiving Holiday

According to an Air Transportation Association release, airlines are expecting to board a record number of passengers for the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday. Four percent more passengers are expected to travel over the holiday period than last year. Aircraft, on average, are expected to fly about 90% full.
Air Transportation Association president and CEO James C. May gave the perennial advice: “to plan ahead and arrive at the airport plenty early.”
In the release the Air Transportation Association offered the following tips for holiday travelers:
Travel with a current government-issued photo identification
Allow plenty of time for checking in and for security screening at the airport. If you are traveling on the busiest days, plan for longer-than-usual security lines
Medications taken on a regular basis should be carried with you onboard
If carrying any liquids or gels in carry-on baggage, they must be in containers of three ounces or less. Pack them in a one-quart zip-top bag and place it separately in a security bin for screening. Only one zip-top bag is allowed per passenger, so what doesn’t fit must be packed in checked luggage. Note that larger quantities of medications and baby formula can be carried onboard
Although now permitted, we recommend that you leave lighters at home. Matches are not permitted. Become familiar with the list of TSA permitted and prohibited items and under what circumstance permitted items may be carried onboard
Before arriving at the security checkpoint, place all metallic objects (e.g., loose change, keys, pens, cell phone, watch, camera) in carry-on baggage
Make sure that each bag is tagged with traveler name and contact information, both on the inside and outside, and remove all destination baggage tags from previous trips

Fly Fishing the Muskegon River

The steelhead migration season begins at the end of October, after the Chinook are finished spawning. Peak months for fishing steelhead are November and December when the fish being their spawning migration. These beauties end the migration near the end of February and into early March.
The best place to fish for chrome torpedoes, the Muskegon River in Newaygo is perfect for fly fishing in early spring and late fall.
Floats and Spawns
If you’re looking for a fast-paced steelhead fishing technique, try fishing floats and spawns. This allows for many hook-ups and a large number of the steelheads will be landed. It’s best to use a longer rod because it gives you a stronger hook-set and a longer drift. Your reel should be a center pin reel that’s been wound with 10 pound test hi-vis line. This will allow for longer casts and smooth drag for your fight with a large steelhead.
When using floats for steelhead in the Muskegon River, they will vary greatly because of water conditions and water levels. The best floats to use for Muskegon River steelheads are Thill orange and black steelhead floats.
Winter Steelhead Fishing
For steelhead fishing in the Muskegon River during November and December, use either a 10’ 8wt fly rod or a 9’6” 8wt fly rod. This allows you to recognize a steelhead pick-up because of the longer drift. Also beneficial is the fact that these longer rods allow for a better presentation, a better mending and they tend to keep your line off of the water’s surface.
Steelhead Flies
The best steelhead flies for use in the Muskegon River is a wide variety of small egg flies. Always use natural colors such as cream, Oregon cheese, steelhead orange and golden.
Steelhead feed in the Muskegon River in fall and are extremely aggressive. They eat almost anything that passes near to them at this time of year. Wooly buggers and egg patterns work best in fall and early winter, as well as wet flies and spey.
If you’re fishing on the Muskegon River in late winter and early spring, use small nymphs and egg patterns with a light leader. This is the time when steelheads are less aggressive. They don’t chase flies like they do in the fall.
In late spring, steelheads become more aggressive, but are particular about what they hit. This is the time to use light leaders and small nymphs. Steelheads enter the Muskegon River for the coming spawn on the gravel runs.
The best way to fish for steelhead on the Muskegon River is by boat. This allows you to reach runs and pools that can’t be accessed by wading, though steelhead can be caught by this method. A good place to wade for steelhead is at the Thornapple Avenue launch in Newaygo, which is not far below the Croton dam.
The mighty Muskegon River provides a great opportunity for steelhead anglers because of the large runs of steelhead found there. If you’re looking for a unique steelhead fishing experience, head for the beautiful Muskegon River in Newaygo. You won’t be sorry.
For lodging in Newaygo, Checkout Hess Lake Rentals (http://www.hesslakerentals.com/) they offer year round waterfront vacation rentals on Hess Lake and the Muskegon River at hotel rates. Other Newaygo accommodations, flights and car rentals can be found at NewaygoHotels.com (http://www.newaygohotels.com/)
