Newcomers: The People of This Place Public Museum of Grand Rapids

More than 45 ethnic groups now call West Michigan their home. Newcomers: The People of This Place is the Public Museum's newest major permanent exhibition. It includes more than 600 artifacts and images; dating from the first French fur traders to the latest influx of refugees escaping wars and others seeking a better standard of living. Interactive maps and photos show where different groups of newcomers settled in West Michigan. Compare the typical jobs and wages of three different immigrant groups. Photos, artifacts, and short video clips highlight different rites of passage concerning birth and death, coming of age, marriage, and holidays. And every group of newcomers brought a great recipe. Viva la difference! Adults $8.00, Seniors $7.00 and Children $3.00

Paris at the turn of the 20th century was a uniquely modern city. The commitment to urban life and to innovative new styles made the work of these artists one of the first important chapters in the history of modern art. Drawn entirely from the permanent collection of the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the exhibition includes works by Edgar Degas and Félix Vallotton, along with recently acquired works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, and Théophile Steinlen on view for the first time. Eugene Masselink: Drawings for Frank Lloyd Wright Through March 1

Eugene Masselink (1910–1962) joined Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesan Fellowship in 1933 as a graphic designer and assistant to Wright. Known as Gene to his colleagues and Wright clients, he quickly became one of Wright’s most trusted protégés and one of the significant talents in the Wright office, producing decorative designs for interiors of many Wright commissions. The annual Downtown Holland Ice Sculpting Competition is even bigger and better this year! For the first time ever, Downtown Holland is partnering with the National Ice Carving Association (NICA) to bring students from culinary schools around the Midwest together for an exciting Collegiate Invitational competition. Stroll through the streets of Downtown from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and watch in amazement as 150-pound blocks of ice are transformed into glistening works of art.

What a great place to celebrate. I've been planning to travel to Michigan for some time, and I think the best time to go would be during New Years. Still have to figure out the travelware items I need to pack so I can be prepared for the cold and some winter snow :) Great post!
