Salmon Fishing in the Pacific

Salmon fishing is one of the most popular fishing sports today and continues to grow in popularity. There are different types of salmon, each with their own unique characteristics and appeal to fishermen.

The largest of the Pacific salmon is the Chinook salmon, which can grow up to 40 inches long and weigh as much as 100 pounds. The Chinook salmon are only accountable for about one percent of the salmon harvest each year.The Sockeye, from Alaska, is the most valuable of all salmon. It grows to 24 inches in length and weighs between six and nine pounds. It makes up 25 to 30 percent of Alaska's commercial fishing. During spawning season, the males turn a beautiful red, and therefore are often called "red" salmon.

A third variety of salmon is the Coho. It too is valuable to the fishing industry. They are silvery and shiny, thus often called "silver" salmon. Customers at seafood counters often take a whole fish home to barbecue. Canning and smoking are other great ways to prepare them and keep in your pantry. They generally weigh in at around 9 pounds and grow up to 29 inches long.

Chum salmon aren't as good to eat as the other varieties. Consumers tend to avoid buying them when they see the pale yellow meat. Therefore they aren't considered that valuable to the fishing industry. Their average weight is 8 pounds and they can be as long as 30 inches.

At the bottom of the Pacific salmon list is the Pink. They are small and used primarily for canning. They average 22 inches and 4 pounds. They are found in greater number than the other salmon. There are many fishing charters along the northern Pacific coast that are very popular among sport fishermen.

If you are an avid fisherman you may want to think about chartering a boat to take you to the finest salmon fishing places along the coast. Many of these charters also offer whale watching tours which is a great way for you to combine your fishing vacation with a bit of sightseeing.

Take your time finding the right charter for you as there are many different packages that you can choose from, including one day excursions to week long trips. You can find good spots for fly fishing in most states, but some are more epic than others. Allow me to introduce you to heaven on earth for anglers.

Fly Fishing Heaven In Montana

Montana is an incredibly beautiful state. It is located on the Canadian border between Wyoming and the Dakotas. It is the fourth largest state with over 145,000 square miles. The central and eastern sections of the state are plains, while the west contains the northern Rocky Mountains. Major rivers include the Yellowstone, Madison, Missouri and Flathead. Montana also has the shortest river in the world, the Roe, which is 201 feet long. Just a bit of trivia for you to throw around on your trip!

The Yellowstone is a tributary of the Missouri River. It is an excellent fly fishing river. The longest undimmed river in the continental United States, the Yellowstone drains the Rocky Mountains in the park of the same name. The river offers excellent trout fishing up and down practically every area. Cutthroat and brown trout are plentiful and active. Rainbows are less so, but still common. The Yellowstone is mostly a no-kill river, so don’t plan on dinner. The Lamar, Soda Butte and Slough Creek tributaries are easily waded and not excessively challenging. Although it may get you in trouble with your mother, the Caddis Fly hatch on Mother’s day is legendary.

When it comes to fly fishing in the states, no river is more legendary than the Madison. For years, nearly every Montana trip started and stopped with a visit to the Madison. In the early 90s, however, the fish in the river were devastated by whirling disease. The disease was accidentally created in fish hatcheries in Europe and spread across the globe. The criminal element is a parasite that infects fish and causes neurological disease. The fish tend to swim in circles, thus giving the disease its name. Fortunately, the fish in the Madison have been on the rebound for the last five years or so. The last three years have seen a major rebound, which means the legendary Madison should be a high on your list.

The Madison is a round rock bottom river and can be slippery. The current isn’t excessive and you can wade most of it without problem. Browns, Cutthroats, Rainbows and Graylings are the prominent fish. The area below Holter Dam is highly recommended by many, but you need to be an accomplished caster to have a good time. Hatches start in April and run through the middle of September. The Salmon Fly hatch in late June is the best, but you really can’t go wrong. As the weather starts to warm up, it is time to start thinking about breaking out the rods and thinking about potential trips. Montana should be at the top of your list.

Remember when we were kids? We were always outside happily entertaining ourselves playing with our friends.

We made up our own games which would last for hours. We even drank water from the garden tap rather than from the bottle.

When I caught my first fish (although tiny) I felt really excited and as though I had accomplished something good. It was great! So, as you can imagine, I went a number of times after that.

Kids love fishing! More often than not, it could be the last thing on your mind to take your kids on a fishing trip, however, the fun to be had is for everyone, and the best thing is that it isn’t expensive.

You don’t have to be a master of fishing to enjoy the sport or to take your kids on a trip. Alaska: The Bear Country

Bear hunting in Alaska is often a hunter 's dream come true. The bears in Alaska often break all the records and hunter 's flock from all over the world to try their hand at a trophy bear. Alaska offers five species of big game to hunt, including grizzly and brown bears.

The only way to successfully hunt Alaska bear country is with a guide. Dozens of guide services are available to choose from in Alaska, but knowing your needs will help to narrow the selection down. Call prospective guides and ask them about recent successful hunts. How many kills have they had? What size were they? Alaska bears regularly grow eight to nine feet high, with skulls from 24 inches-28inches.

The sizes do vary from year to year depending upon climate and other factors, but these figures will give you an idea of what to expect.

Another great location for Alaska bear hunting is Bristol Bay. The area is known as world record bear country, and trips here take you into the remote wilderness, a few hundred miles from the nearest connection to the North American road system. Spring is the best time to plan your trip. This time of year offers prime hides, dense fur with long thick hair, and heavy claws. If a hunt in the Spring isn't possible, bear season is long, eight months, from Sept to May.

Bristol Bay will offer a hunter the best chance at trophy bear, and some of the best scenery available in all of North America. Brown bears are found throughout nearly all of Alaska, except for the islands south of Frederick Sound in southeast Alaska, the islands west of Unimak, and the islands of the Bering Sea. There is however one island that is famous for it 's bears. At one time grizzlies and brown bears used to be considered two separatespecies, now it is known that genetically they are identical, and that it is only habitat that causes their variations.

However, the bears on Kodiak Island, Kodiak bears, are a whole new species. The shape of the skull differs slightly, and they grow to be much bigger bears. These characteristics came to define them over generations because they were separated from the rest of the gene pool. In the wild, brown bears can have a lifespan of up to 34 years. This is however rare, as males live to be about 22 years, while females reach about 26. It 's also important to note when hunting that bears have an excellent sense of smell. In the right conditions, they can detect odors from more than a mile away. The weight of the bear will fluctuate dependent upon the season, late fall is the best time to catch a bear at it 's heaviest.

Something else to note when hunting the brown bear is that he may not be so easily distinguished by color alone. Their colors vary, from dark to a light blonde. Browns can also be distinguished by they're size; they are bigger than a grizzly and have larger shoulder humps, smaller ears, and their claws are longer and straighter, which have adapted to catch fish better. As long as a hunter takes the proper precautions and knows the bears he 's hunting, he can have a safe, successful hunt, with plenty of wild and stunning scenery as a backdrop.

Muskegon-The Port City
