The Three Basic Types Of Paintball Barrels

By Kristina Stevens

Paintball players always seem to be arguing over which is the best type of paintball gun barrel to use when out on the field trying to tag each other. There are many debates as to which one has the best acceleration and accuracy, so let me briefly cover the basic types of paintball gun barrels that are used in the sport of paintball.

So in a nutshell, there are three types of barrel designs when it comes to paintball guns.

The first kind of design is polished barrels. This type of design does not have any rifling at all inside the barrels. It is micro-honed and polished to a mirror-like appearance that is thought to reduce ball breaks inside the barrel and reduce drag to maintain longer distances.

The majority of paintball players that are out there today use the polished barrels. This could be due to the fact that most of the polished barrels are pretty light when it comes to taking cash out of the wallet, meaning they are cheaper than most, and still perform well.

The second type of barrel design in paintball guns is called the no spin barrel. This type of concept has rifling grooved inside the paintball barrel designed to minimize the amount of spin that the paintball has when it shoots out the barrel. This concept was mimicked in the cannon ball design concept where minimizing the spin will increase the accuracy of the gun.

Of course the no spin paintball gun barrels come in many different models, you will get what you pay for. I am sure that the more expensive paintball gun barrels are much more accurate than the cheaper no spin paintball barrels that are out there in the market today.

Last but not least there is the spin rifling paint ball gun barrel. Unlike the one previously mentioned, this is specifically made to add spin to the paint balls that are shot out of the barrel.

The more that the paintball is able to spin in a uniform motion, the less it will be bothered by factors such as wind. Not only that, it will also travel much faster and in most cases more further than its counterpart no spin paintball gun barrel.
