The Plaza Mayor, one of the key tourist spots in Madrid, brings in crowd of over a million each year.

While it is not an architectural wonder like so many other attractions, The Plaza Mayor is the best place to experience Madrid's welcoming atmosphere. It's popular with Spanish citizens as well as tourists, making a good place to meet and interact with citizens of the country.

The Plaza Mayor was established hundreds of years ago, but a fire in 1790 contributed to its current shape. It's served as a public square in the most literal sense throughout that time and has hosted bullfights, political battles, festivals and even beheadings. Reading up on it's history prior to visiting it, or even whilst there, will make a trip there even more worthwhile.

The Plaza measures at approximately 100m on every end (which is not considered to be very huge by some), but is able to contain almost 50,000 spectators at one time. It's often crowded, particularly so in the summer months. To have a genuine Spanish adventure, the various festivals they have through out the years are a great chance to experience the culture.

Restaurants, cafes, and bars are abound if you want to sit down and have lunch or dinner, or if you just want to relax with a drink for a while. There is a vast array of traditional Spanish foods that are affordably priced. Various gift shops are also abound for your browsing pleasure, ready sell you trinkets to remind you of your wonderful trip.

The buildings surrounding the square provide convenient spots for those who want to look down on the events taking place below. If you have time, it is recommended to make your way to these buildings, as you will be out of the bustle of people and able to enjoy the sights and sounds the Plaza Mayor has to offer.
