The Essentials Needed for Backpacking and Hiking

The Essentials Needed for Backpacking and Hiking

by Shawn Stanley

Two of the most thrilling outdoor activities for individuals and families would have to be backpacking or hiking. When choosing an outdoor activity with such an element of the unknown it is important to prepare for every scenario before heading off on the backpacking or hiking trail. Backpacking or hiking requires supplies and essentials to make the event more safe and secure.

The suns rays. The sun can be very damaging to many parts of the body. When backpacking or hiking, the sun can be in contact with the skin and eyes the entire day spent walking. Sunscreen that is waterproof and of an SPF of 30 or more can provide just enough protection for the skin. The eyes, on the other hand, are the body parts left unprotected. Including a pair or two of sunglasses in every pack will help to make the trip easy to see and safer for the eyes.

Safety First. Many people forget about safety when backpacking or hiking, but there can be problems and when there are, a whistle can help. Depending on where you are backpacking or hiking, a whistle with no "pea" (the small ball in the center) may be the best choice. If the backpacking or hiking is taking place during cold months, the "pea" could freeze. Along those same lines, a plastic whistle will be sure to never stick to your lips in the cold.

Water, water and more water. Many beginning backpacking or hiking people think the water they need to take is always in the liquid form. But, that is not the best choice when trying to keep your pack light. Today there are many water filtration systems that can filter anything and everything from the water. These are perfect to use as a backup when the liquid of life has run out when backpacking or hiking.

Bring the heat. A firestarter or waterproof matches are essential when backpacking or hiking. A fire will be needed for those backpacking or hiking trips that last overnight. But, even for the day trips, matches and / or a firestarter are needed if only as a safety precaution. Safety is the number one concern and it is always better to be safe than sorry when backpacking or hiking.

First aid out of doors. A first aid kit is needed for every pack. Backpacking and hiking takes places in environments that can lead to cuts, bruises and other forms of injuries. A first aid kit in every backpack can help to ensure the safety and health of all backpacking and hiking team members. Within these first aid kits should also be a pocket knife and a pocket tool set.

Finding your way. When in an environment that is not native, there needs to be a way to stay on track with the trail. This is especially important just in case a member or two gets lost from the rest of the backpacking and hiking team. A compass and a map needs to be included in every pack. Today, there are even GPS locators that can be used when traveling through nature on foot.

Hiking and backpacking are great ways to get a little physical activity and become better acquainted with nature and life outside. Together as a team, the backpacking and hiking group needs to make sure that every pack includes these essentials as a base and build the pack from there.

Before you go out into the wilderness next time make sure you're prepared by reading over our tips on (http://www.outdoorsinsight.com/) hiking safety and (http://www.outdoorsinsight.com/articles1.shtml) backpacking preparedness.

Beginner's Guide To Identifying Birds

Beginner's Guide To Identifying Birds

by William Scott

If you enjoy watching birds, you might want to know how to identify them, too. It can be exciting to find a bird you haven't seen before, but it's even more exciting to be able to identify them. It's not always a simple thing to do, though. It can be frustrating if you don't have the proper information to work with. Having a good field guide is a good way to start. However, you'll also need to glean some knowledge on your own before you can even use the field guide properly. If you're just starting out as a bird watcher, then, there are a few things you can do that will help you identify birds more accurately.

The Size of the Bird

One of the most important factors in identifying a bird will be its size. Is it the size of a robin? A chicken? Perhaps an ostrich? Size is important here, as is the ability to evaluate the body type of the bird you are watching. Would you characterize the bird as long or short, plump or skinny? Take the entire body into account, including the beak, tail and wings (both size and shape) when making this evaluation.

Note the Colors

What colors does the bird exhibit? Certain birds tend to exhibit certain colors, so you can identify some birds by color or pattern alone. However, colors, too, can be tricky. The lighting can affect the color so that the bird appears a different color than he or she really is. In addition, make sure you note colors on each part of the body as well. Are the legs of a certain color, or are the wings? Are there any specific and unique markings anywhere on the body that you could use to help identify the bird?

Where are You?

Knowing where you bird watch is also going to be a help when you identify birds. Where are you when you bird watch? Are you on the water, in your front yard, inside a large forest? Certain birds stay within one particular habitat. If the bird's in the water, wading or swimming, can it actually climb a tree, too? Does it fly, and if so, where and how? How does it move its tail? All of these things will help you when you want to identify the birds you watch.

Listening to Identify Birds

One of the most important things to keep in mind when you're watching birds is that how they sound can help you figure out what they are, too. Every bird species has a unique song; if you listen, you may be able to identify the bird you're watching just by what you can hear. If you listen closely, you might even see some birds that you would never have seen otherwise. It's not always helpful to listen when you identify a bird, but it's another piece of information that can definitely help you.

Next time you go on a bird watching adventure, keep these tips in mind to help you in your efforts. They'll help you identify the birds you see, and this will make it a much more rewarding and fun experience for you, too.

Helmet Key Part Of Cycling Training

Helmet Key Part Of Cycling Training

by Adam Peters

Extreme Mountain Biking

As with most sports, and most activities in general, the "limits" of mountain biking have been pushed back, to a new area called extreme. While biking on the rocks and rugged ground of the American countryside is challenging enough in most eyes, there are always a handful of people who want to see how far they can go beyond what might be considered reasonable.

The key difference is the intensity of the riding, always seeking higher elevations, steeper inclines and rougher terrain to test the endurance of both person and bike. This variation on mountain biking, of course, demands more of the human body, so cycling training becomes even more essential for those taking part.

To Be An Extreme Mountain Biker

To take part in this new sport, and to be successful, will require a commitment to being in top physical shape. In addition, the bike and protective gear used by the rider will have to be the best available. A bike made for the demands of extreme mountain biking will be a bit different than the mountain bike used by a recreational rider. This can translate into additional cost, because the frame, wheels and tires will have to be very strong and reliable.

Most of those with experience in extreme mountain biking will urge beginners to put away the idea of buying a used bike, simply because a new, specially-designed bike will be more reliable and durable. In addition, extreme mountain bike participants should do all they can to ensure that the bike they ride fits them physically. For the serious mountain biker, the extra money spent up front will pay off in the long run, in success and safety.

Before starting cycling training for this sport, riders should invest in the best helmet they can afford. Extreme mountain biking didn't get the adjective "extreme" by accident, so safety has to be a prime consideration. A durable helmet, slightly thicker than a regular riding helmet, is probably in order. Experience has taught other riders that a top-quality helmet can be the difference between life and death in a dangerous sport.

When considering extreme mountain biking, the individual should also take some time to put together the correct clothing, probably before even beginning cycling training. Comfortable clothing that does not distract the rider is crucial in this demanding sport. Bike apparel designed only for mountain bike riding is best, of course.

While the new bike, helmet and other gear may be ready, no one should begin this sport (or any other) without being in good physical condition. A reasonable amount of time should be spent with (http://www.bikecyclingreviews.com/training.html) cycling training, to build strength and stamina. The rewards for success in extreme mountain biking come at a cost, measured in preparation, conditioning and commitment.

Show the World You Love Skydiving

Show the World You Love Skydiving Tours

by Matthew Anderson

There is never an end to the odd sports that people want to do or combine. In May of 2007, a Swede called "Jonas" decided he wanted to combine two things he loves-tattoos and skydiving-by being tattooed while parachuting at 13,000 feet. He had to keep it simple, of course because it had to be done quickly. They must have used an altimeter watch to measure the time. But the tattoo certainly said it all: the tattoo said WFFT, which stood for "World's First Free Fall Tattoo". For his efforts, Jonas got his name in the Guinness Book of Records for being the first person to be tattooed while skydiving.

For the rest of us, getting a tattoo is scary enough without being suspended in the air at the same time.

But if you do want to commemorate your love of skydiving, a tattoo depicting the sport is the perfect solution. This may symbolize the sport that is an important part of your life, or you may just want to find a new way to express yourself.

Skydivers like to believe that they are the masters of their destinies, just as they control their descent in the air. This is not a bad thing to symbolize.

Just picture the grace and beauty of a tattoo depicting a skydiver floating down to earth from the sky, with a colorful parachute suspended above him. The palette is open to you, since it is as big as the sky. You can add clouds, birds or the sun. Why not have the diver in free fall? Depending on your philosophy, you could have him looking very relaxed as he fell, or he could have a look of panic on his face. Since traditionally, parachutists yelled "Geronimo" on the way down, how about a tattoo of the Indian chief Geronimo yelling your name on the way down? You are only limited by your imagination and the skill of your tattoo artist.

One of the most important things to do is to make sure you choose your tattoo design carefully. You are probably stuck with it for life. You should also make sure you only go to a reputable tattoo parlor with clean equipment and skilled practitioners. Discuss your dreams and ideas, your love of the sport of skydiving and how much design (or pain-the larger and more colorful tattoos are more painful to do) you want to have.

A good tattoo artist will do an outline of the proposed design and then transfer it to your skin. Then the outline will be done in black and white and the colors and design added. If it is an intricate design, it may take a number of visits to the parlor before your work of art is complete.

What you Need to Know About Skydiving

What you Need to Know About Skydiving

by Matthew Anderson for Your Travel Buddy Adventure Tours

As skydiving becomes more and more popular, many people may be interested to know some of the facts of skydiving. Whether you are just taking a one time jump with a tandem instructor for the one time thrill of it, or you have decided that this is a great sport for the long haul, this information is sure to be interesting for you.

Health Matters

Many people think that if they have certain disorders, they will be unable to skydive. This may not necessarily be true. Everyone has to sign a medical form attesting that they are fit to participate in the sport, so if you have a disorder, but your doctor does not believe it will interfere with your enjoyment of this sport, he can give you permission to do so. If you have high blood pressure, but it is under control due to medication, your doctor may allow you to skydive.

Another myth is that you have to be fairly young to skydive. Most skydivers are under the age of forty, and most skydiving centers require that you be at least 18, but if you have the drive and desire, and are in condition, you can skydive at any age. Look at former President Bush, who celebrated his 80th birthday by skydiving!

One of the factors that discourages most people from skydiving is the expense. Besides buying the proper equipment, such as jumpsuits and parachutes which are very expensive, you have to hire a plane and pilot to get you up there.

Some people have found a unique way to jump, by doing it as a charity event. The idea is to get enough sponsors to support the charity you choose and their contributions pay for your dive, with the additional proceeds going to the charity.

How dangerous is skydiving? It sure sounds dangerous to just jump out of a plane from thousands of feet in the air and hoping a piece of material will save you from crashing to the earth.

Statistically speaking, however, skydiving is safer than jumping on a Greyhound for the next town. There are so many safety measures and new technologies in place now that skydivers are very protected from accident or injury. Just look at the new technologies in altimeters, that allow skydivers to know the exact moment to deploy the parachute, even if they are freefalling upside down!

Hopefully you have learned a little about skydiving to demystify this wonderful sport. Despite the fact that it is thrilling and exciting, it is open to many people and is very safe to participate in.

Learn Patience At Skydiving School

by Andrew Caxton

Recreational Skydiving - Trust

Skydiving is not a terrifying experience for the amateur with hundreds of jumps on his or her log, and certainly is not terrifying for the professional who goes to the freefall zone each day like some of us go to the office or the factory. But for the newcomer, it is extremely difficult to jump out of an airplane (a safe place) and put your health in the hands of an instructor and a parachute.

Skydiving school will help with some of this trepidation, especially if the on-the-ground sessions are presented and received by individuals who take the subject matter very seriously. But the first one, two, even three, times that a beginner leaves the safety of the aircraft behind, he or she will feel anxiety, even fear. It take trust, from the first minute of skydiving school, to make this great sport all that it can be.

Growth From The Beginning

Parachuting has been widely used as a military exercise to get soldiers into specific battle locations, in addition to providing a safety exit for pilots and crew of damage airplanes. In the past 50 years or so, parachuting and skydiving have become a popular pastime for recreational skydivers. This all the while that a forest-fire fighters, medical personal and military make extensive use of the method for their purposes.

Along this path of extensive growth, skydiving has been tried by thousands who learned a lot about trust from their skydiving school staff. Whether they try a tandem jump, harnessed to an experienced sky diver who remains in control, or start with a static line jump, newcomers to the sport have to fully understand the school information and trust that it will work!

In addition to the parachute, jumpsuit, helmet and goggles, many current-day skydivers are more than familiar with a good altimeter and the various methods of deploying a parachute, including the manual ripcord and the automatic system that may operate on altitude or time.

From This Position

If the beginner chooses to start skydiving school with the accelerated freefall method, he might bypass the physical dependence on the instructor and other experienced skydivers. However, the newcomer will not be able to bypass any of the necessary information and the serious warnings offered by the professional staff at a skydiving school.

Skydiving is just about as close to human flight as most people will ever get. It is an experience that everyone that might have a place on everyone's bucket list.

Benefits of Hiking

Posted by Your Travel Buddy on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 , under , , , | comments (0)

Hiking - Positives Outweigh the Negatives

by Clinton Maxwell

Are you thinking about taking up the challenging and exhilarating activity of hiking? It is surely something that's rewarding but it?s hard to know what to expect if you?ve never tried it. Here are some things to expect and some myths about hiking.

Many people think of the negatives that are associated with hiking. There are insects, blisters on your feet, sore legs and an aching back. While this may sound unpleasant, there are many rewards which outweigh these drawbacks. You?ll be able to get outside the city and enjoy the fresh air and the chance to commune with nature. Not only will you be able to get physical exercise but you?ll also have some solitude to gain mental release. Having a hiking a buddy will also give you time to connect with a friend or a relative (or make new friends).

There are some myths or misguided thoughts associated with hiking. Some confuse hiking with mountain climbing which is something completely different. Climbing requires special gear and techniques for scaling steep grades and the sport can be potentially dangerous. Hiking is more of an activity than a sport. While hiking can have some dangers, such as getting lost or bitten by a snake, it is an extremely safe activity.

Hiking requires you to have some basics but no special equipment is necessary, especially if you?re just starting off on short, day hikes. All you?ll need to get started are some good hiking boots and appropriate clothing for the climate you?ll be hiking in.

While running or walking shoes will suffice for a hike of a couple of hours, you?ll want to invest in some proper hiking boots if you want to really pursue hiking. Hiking boots give you the proper support, the right amount of insulation and the soles are specially made for rough and slippery terrain. While they may cost more than you think they should, they will be well worth the investment. A well made pair of hiking boots will last you years.

Hiking on well marked, well trodden paths are pretty straight forward and you have little chance of getting lost. You should bring a compass and map, especially if you?re interested in getting off the trail. Make sure you know how to use them before you start out on your hike. Once you get more experienced and adventurous you may consider purchasing a GPS unit which uses satellites to locate your position and direction.

Hiking is sure to be something that you?ll enjoy and benefit from. There is very little equipment needed to get started so what are you waiting for?

Extreme Shydiving Adventures

Extreme Skydiving Adventures Will Not Disappoint

by Steven Milstone

Have you been dreaming of taking up skydiving? Does the thought of jumping out of a plane with a parachute strapped to your back and free-falling excite you? An extreme skydiving adventure may be just the ticket for you. If you are a risk taker and daredevil this is just the sort of exciting sport you would enjoy.

Now, not everyone is ready to jump, as it were, straight into this kind of extreme sport, save for the very most hardened thrill seekers among us. It takes more than a little bit of mental preparation (or a truly exceptional disposition) to be ready to jump out of a plane and plummet to Earth at speeds exceeding a hundred miles an hour. For instance, consider how far one falls in extreme skydiving. Say you jump out of the plane at thirteen thousand feet; typically one opens the parachute at about twenty five hundred feet and then gently drifts the rest of the way. This means there is a free fall of nearly two miles!

Obviously, you can't just jump out of a plane completely unprepared. Skydiving lessons are a necessity, not just a good idea. There is of course a small degree of danger associated with extreme sky diving, so lessons are an absolute must. Skydiving certification can be obtained relatively quickly, depending on the particular skydiving instructors and methodology used. Sometimes you can become certified in as little as two days.

Listen, learn and ask questions of the highly qualified instructors. They will have jumped hundreds of times and more than likely have had a hundred different experiences. Take advantage of their knowledge of the equipment, planes, and other key elements that go into a safe and successful jump.

Many well trained skydivers have suffered fatal accidents. It is necessary to have a healthy respect for the particular extreme sport you are involved in. Jumping out of a plane at an extreme altitude is nothing to take lightly.

An extreme skydiving adventure is no time to learn the basics. Remember the old Boy Scout moto ~ "Be prepared."

Taking the lessons you have learned it is time to find your gear. Your life depends upon the quality of the gear. Rent or purchase through reputable sites.

Now that you have completed your lessons, found quality gear you are ready for your extreme skydiving adventure.

Adventure Travel Insurance

Purchasing Adventure Travel Insurance By Location

by Linden Walhard

Adventure travel insurance should certainly be on your list of essential pre-vacation needs. Vacation planning entails a lot more than simply checking the local climate or packing your luggage. Purchasing adventure travel insurance is an excellent decision for any adventure travel vacation. You can also find insurance that covers a specific activity you anticipate trying.

For instance, if you are looking forward to an adventure trip including backpacking, you can find travel insurance to cover that particular activity and provide you with the protection you need while enjoying the exploration experience. The same goes for other activities including, but surely not limited to, snowboarding, kayaking, skiing or so many other water sports or winter sports.

Location and budget are two additional factors to consider when finding and purchasing adventure travel insurance. Someone snowboarding and skiing in the United Kingdom may want to choose adventure travel insurance that covers the areas of the United Kingdom, Northern Island and the Channel Islands. You should then indicate whether you want a policy lasting for only a short period of time or an annual policy, all of which obviously depends on your travel habits. When traveling to the United Kingdom, there are two levels of insurance from which you can choose depending on your needs and budget.

Adventure travel insurance is, basically, essential when visiting the different countries of Asia. If you plan to enjoy parachuting or trekking through the mountain ranges of Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia, among others, it is very important that you purchase an adventure travel insurance policy. Without such a policy, you may find yourself dealing with the local health force and ruining what should have been a fantastic experience.

Actually, your adventure travel insurance policy can cover you even for activities in the United States that involve increased risk and are not covered by traditional travel insurance. Often, American insurance companies request that you list the sports and activities you would like covered by your adventure travel insurance policy and provide a quote based on that information.

Companies offering adventure travel insurance packages care will handle your overseas travel wherever you decide to go. They will also include over one hundred different sports and activities, such as skiing, backpacking, bungee jumping and any other adrenalin-pumping activity. This was useful for my recent trip to (http://www.alicante-spain.com/alicante-weather.html) alicante, where the weather was beautiful.

Some adventure sports are relatively dangerous and realistically quite risky. However, it has been determined that adventure travel insurance companies oftentimes pay for more incidents occurring in hotel rooms rather than in the outdoors where the sporting activities occur. You never know when an injury can occur so having a solid adventure travel insurance plan is useful to ensure you are covered whenever such coverage is required.

by Joseph Then

Let me ask you a simple question. Have you ever thought of backpacking? Well, if you have been thinking of the adventure and fun you will have while backpacking, then you are at the right place. This article will offer tell you why you should backpack.

What is backpacking? Backpacking is a term that has historically been used to denote a form of low-cost, independent international travel. Terms such as independent travel and/or budget travel are often used interchangeably with backpacking.

I am sure some of you may find it difficult to find friends who are willing to travel with you. Some of your friends are not keen to go on an adventure like this.

Well another way you can backpack is by backpacking alone. You do not need to travel with your friends as many people travel alone. Well, if you aren't confident. Trust me; you will make friends on your journey.

Here's a tip; the easiest way to meet people when traveling is to get involved in activities. This way you will meet new people and be in a shared situation where conversation comes easily. Here's another tip if you're traveling alone; simply strike up conversation with someone with a smile.

Some people go backpacking because they want to get away from their daily life and people around them. These people will leave behind work, family and friends but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Well if you are living behind your boy/girlfriend, here's a tip that I can offer you. You should take a timeout before you leave. Well, if you are in a serious relationship the I suggest that you both should come out with ground rules when you are away.

Making the decision to travel solo is a great step, but it's important to know what it is you actually want to do while traveling.

If you think that you don't know what you are doing, you should do some research about the countries you are going to before setting off? The other thing you should remember is that you also should learn how to manage you money well. The best suggestion I can give you is that you should take some pointer on managing your money.

Dealing with unfamiliar things around you can be overwhelming. But, the learning experience you get from backpacking cannot be bought with any amount of money.

I always carry a guide book or a book which translates English into a native language around. Trust me, it helps. This sounds corny but you can consider carrying a picture of your family with you, in case you get home sick.

Some people go backpacking because they want to learn new things and experience a different lifestyle. Some go because they want to bring home a whole new perspective of life.

What more can you ask for? Gain as much knowledge by experiencing what locals do and how they spend their day.

Now that you know this, what are you waiting for? You should take this opportunity to get your mind relaxed.

Backpacking can be a great experience, even if you go backpacking alone. Skip all the newbie's errors by learning some (http://www.backpackingtips.net/) Backpacking Tips.

Hiking Tips for the Beginner

by Peter Wilson

Are you thinking of taking up hiking? It?s certainly an exhilarating activity and some even describe it as spiritual but due to the nature of the activity there are some things to keep in mind. Here are some tips that are key to hiking.

Hiking requires you to keep a pace and take short rest periods about once an hour. You?ll burn many more calories and require more hydration than ordinary walking. The terrain of rocks, slippery ground and steep slopes makes hiking more physically demanding. The higher altitude also has an effect since you have to do more work to fight gravity and when oxygen levels drop your heart has to do more work to pump more blood.

You?ll need about a liter of fluid for every hour of hiking and more if the climate is warm or you?re exerting yourself more than usual. Bringing enough water or electrolyte drink is essential and while it will be heavy to carry at first, the weight decreases as you drink it.

Hiking in high altitude terrain can be more interesting and exciting than hiking in the low, well-trodden paths of the foothills but you?ll need more stamina and physical ability. The best way to ensure you?re not over exerting yourself is by monitoring your heart rate. The target heart rate varies depending on your age, weight and physical health but ranges from 70 beats per minutes resting to 120 per minute while working out. You can take your pulse manually or use a heart monitor to keep track. Keeping your heart rate at a normal level will also help you avoid High Altitude Syndrome or Acute Mountain Sickness which will make you dizzy and have a headache at the very least.

Make sure you bring gear that suits the terrain and environment. Your hiking boots should be waterproof to help keep your feet dry and problem-free. Also bring a backpack that is made of water resistant material to keep your provisions and other equipment dry.

Above everything else, use common sense and prudence. While you want to challenge yourself, you don?t want to put yourself in harm?s way. Taking a dangerous shortcut could lead to injury or at least loosing your way and requiring you to backtrack. The wilderness is not a place to let your ego get the best of you so don?t take risks that can put your life in danger.

Keeping hydrated, pacing yourself by keeping track of your heart rate, bringing proper gear and using common sense is essential to hiking. These key tips will get you started in this exciting and exhilarating activity.

Florida Scuba Diving Locations

Florida Scuba Diving Locations

by Paul De Vizard

Florida is one of the greatest spots in the United States for scuba diving. The waters are full of marine life and interesting diving items such as ship wrecks.

Scuba diving spots are many and include fresh water dives for caves and caverns. Many sea vessels have been purposefully sunk in areas to create artificial reefs.

Pennekamp Park and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are popular places to dive. Trips to the USS Spiegel Grove and USCG cutters Bibb and Duane provide great underwater views

Also the USS Spiegel Grove which is a 510 ft. landing ship dock lying upright in 140ft of water. Much of the wreck lies between 70ft and 100ft.

The US Coast Guard Cutters Bibb and Duane are 327 ft. Treasury Class cutters in the Florida diving area. The dives are serviced by local dive operators with regular day trips, sometimes up to twice a day depending on weather conditions.

Pensacola

Pensacola, Florida diving spots consist mainly of wrecks of sea vessels. They range from smaller tug boats to naval aircraft carriers. There is even an oilrig or two in some areas all within short distances of land.

All of the diving areas in Florida require the use of diving operators as you cannot get to the areas from land entry points.

Crystal River

In this area, manatees are the main attraction for divers but you must ask permission from the local ranges and government concerning diving with them because they are an endangered species and they are protected by the State.

They congregate in herds in the warm waters from November through April and can reach an average 10 feet in length and 1,000 pounds.

Divers can experience dozens of freshwater springs that boil from the underground. This unusual mix of Gulf waters creates a marine environment that is nothing short of fantastic. You are also likely to find tarpon, snapper and large mouth bass and garfish.

Diving in Crystal River is very adventurous and not at all that deep. There are caves for exploration in this area but the wild life is not that varied.

Florida Keys Diving

This area is a chain of islands that have many shipwrecks and some great coral reefs It is also the only living coral reef in the Continental US which one can access from many of the small islands around the Florida Keys.

Scuba diving operators are many and have any number of dive spots for you to choose from. Visitors from out of state usually head for the beach or the Florida scuba diving spots when they arrive.

Adventure Travel-Snowboarding Basics

by Jeff Harold

Snowboarding tricks seem pretty impossible, especially if you feel that you're not the best athlete. Snow boarding isn't the easiest sport to pick up. The best way to pick up snowboarding is to go slowly and practice, practice, and practice some more. You should learn the basics before you go looking to perform tricks.

Simple things like carrying your board without hitting someone, gliding, and skating over flat terrain should all be mastered before you even think about trying a snowboarding trick. Once you can get on a board without falling off a skate reasonably well, then you can start to think about pulling your first snowboarding trick.

Getting Up On Your Snowboard

It falls into the looks easier than it is category getting on your board. To make sure you pull off your cool first snowboarding trick successfully you want to get very comfortable with the feel your board.

When you first strap on your board make sure to do it in a place that is quiet with low traffic. Try to find a place where there isn't alot of people around the first time you to strap on your board. Try to do this on flat ground or in an area with a very gentle incline.

Place the board on the ground with the bottom of the board faces you and the bindings are away from you. Now place the board flat on the ground. Put on the safety leash on your front leg if you are on an incline. This will keep the board from sliding away from you.

Your front leg now goes in the front binding. Your heel should be in place securely before you fasten the ankle strap. Now fasten the toe strap. It should not be painful but it should be snug otherwise your foot is going to come loose.

Now move your board around once your foot has been securely strapped in. Stand up and then bring the board towards you with just the one foot strapped in. To help you bring the board towards you bend your knee. Do this a few times to get the feel of the board.

Now in a reverse fashion you want to repeat this step. Lift your board behind you, pushing your leg out. This is done by placing your free foot in front of the board. This should help prep you for the next step of learning a snowboarding trick. It is very important before you try to do any snowboarding trick to get comfortable with you board.

Adventure Travel-Skydiving Know How

by Andrew Caxton

Research and experience have made the sport safer, convincing many more to skydive.

Skydiving Research Adds To Safety

In the 50 years since parachuting became a popular sport with the public, a lot of research has been done to fine tune the equipment. From the shape and size of the chute to the way the rip cord opens the parachute pack, much of this study has been focused on allowing people to skydive more safely. For the serious skydiver every jump can be the source of research to improve the sport.

It has been nearly 50 years since a man rode a hot-air balloon more than 100,000 feet into the air, taking about 90 minutes to make the vertical trip. In a special suit, this fellow left the balloon gondola and descended 20 miles to the earth in just over four minutes. Records based on thousands of jumps show that, in the thin atmosphere, Capt. Joe Kittinger of the United States Air Force probably reached free fall speeds of 700 miles per hour.

While this is an extreme example, skydiving and parachuting has long been a great source of information about what the human body can do under certain conditions, how freefalling objects react in the atmosphere and much more. The record number of parachute descents in a day still stands at 640. One person has recorded more than 36,000 jumps. But the research goes on to this day, contributing to the development of safety equipment, fire-fighting equipment and medical uses for skydiving and parachuting.

Better Equipment From Research

Of course, the more daring and creative among human beings believe that the science of a skydive can be extended to a jump from outer space, though this would probably be a deadly action for the individual without some serious fire protection. The speed at which the re-entry would occur would probably burn the person to death. Yet there is much more practical research going on, including development of more accurate altimeters, new ways of measuring and reading altitude, temperature, heart rate and so on. Parachute shapes have changed quite a bit over the years, primarily due to reports from skydivers who felt new shapes and fabric weights would make the slow descent and landing easier to control. As this research adds to the safety of the sport, more and more people will be enticed to (http://www.skydiving-parachuting-guide.com/learn-how-to-skydive.html) skydive.

So, if someone has ever thought about taking up this breathtaking sport, past experience and research has made skydiving as safe and enjoyable as ever.

Adventure Travel-Fly Fishing for Bass

by William Scott

When you think of fly fishing, you probably think about catching trout. However, fly fishing has changed. You can now fish for bass too! Fly fishing for bass has become a very popular method of catching bass. It has also become a very popular sport in America. When fly fishing for bass, you can catch mouth largemouth and smallmouth bass. When learning how to become successful in fly fishing for bass, it is very important that you know about fly fishing itself and how it works. It is also important to know how to be able to catch a decent sized fish to show off or to take home for a meal.

The Challenge Of Fly Fishing For Bass

The reason why bass fishing does not generally come to mind when thinking about fly fishing is because many people are not experienced in bass fishing, have not done enough research on the subject, or do not possess the necessary equipment (boats, rods, etc.).

Bass fishing can be a real challenge, which makes the thrill of the catch that much more exciting. They are quite an aggressive species of fish - they can put up a quite a fight once hooked. They are also heavier than trout so they are not always easy to reel in. If you are up for a challenge that will really test your abilities as a fly fisherman, try fly fishing for bass as soon as possible!

Why Should You Use A Fly Rod To Catch Bass?

Although it may seem so, it is not such a strange thing to fly fish for bass. In fact, there are many different types of fish that can be caught with a fly rod, including trout (the most popular type), pike, carp, and small- and largemouth bass.

The first thing to ensure when preparing to fly fish for bass is that you have a good, strong fly rod that will be able to reel in a bass of any size. Bass are extremely strong, aggressive fish so a lightweight fly rod will not be sufficient. The advantage of using a fly rod to catch bass is that it is much easier to hook the fish. Bass are generally quite a ravenous species of fish that are always eager to latch on to bait, so the fly rod and lure will do most of the attracting for you.

What Kind Of Fly And Rod Should You Use When Fly Fishing For Bass?

If you decide that you want to try out fly fishing for bass, you should most definitely invest in a Wooly Buggers. This specific type of fly is perfect for catching both largemouth and smallmouth bass because it is large in size. When it comes to fishing for bass, it is best to use a dry fly of any size; however, it has been said that the larger the fly, the better your catch.

It is best to use a 6 to 7 weight fly rod when going bass fly fishing. It is, however, also possible to use a 4 to 5 weight fly rod but this makes it a bit more difficult to cast out the larger flies that are suggested for successful bass fishing. With regard to the type of line used for bass fly fishing, ensure that you have a rod that uses both sinking and floating line (depending on the circumstances). Aside from all these recommendations, it is of utmost importance to find a rod that suits your personal preferences and needs. Your rod must feel comfortable in your hands - not too heavy, nor too light. Once you have purchased a suitable, comfortable fly fishing rod, you are good to go! You are sure to enjoy the experience thoroughly!

Fly fishing for bass has become very popular in the USA. Whether you are fishing for sport or for food, using a fly fishing rod to catch bass can be a lot of fun.

Extreme Skiing Vacations

Extreme Skiing-the Grate Uutdoor Sport

by Roberts

Skiing is an out door sport and as such you need gear that will keep you warm and dry. Fundamentals are ski pants (waterproof and warm), a ski jacket, gloves, a hat (toque) and thin socks. Skiing is not all about balls - it is about balance. I have seen many friends - resolute to ski off-piste or bust - continue to bang their heads against their lack of skill until finally they learn to do it properly. Skiing is best in the East but the west is getting better. In fact any of the ski area should give some great sport.

Skiing is individual's choice of the few sports where men and women take part in team, Skiing is immense sport but can be unsafe. Next to golf, it is not in fact a sport but a part of middle-class pretension. If you haven't had a catastrophe on the slopes, you have got to know someone who has, don't spoil it by taking unnecessary risks, being banned from the Mountain, or getting yourself prosecuted or tangled up in a court case is not worth it.

Skiing compared with off-pisting

The snow is hardly ever light powder, but spring skiing offers very good pledge and yet more so if you're prepared to sweat for your turns. Off-pisting is other than skiing, and includes learning new skill to deal with continually shifting snow surfaces, Be sure to familiarize your self with the safety measures.

Off-piste skiing is a winter sport, all of its own. From a beginner's off-piste lessons, survival skills, camping and rock-climbing skill are a must being dropped off on the top of a mountain by a helicopter, to ski tours are found in winter Holiday packages.

Ticks and Tips for skiing and snowboarding

Snowboards can be rented in Les Houches and there are schools to instruct you how to do it. Snow quality is usually superb until late in the season, as the lifts go up beyond 11,000 feet. The runs from Plateau Rosa down to the village are long and varied (Ventina piste is my favourites), as are the runs to Valtournanche. Snowboarding is very trendy and invigorating

With the winter sun, warm on the back, cast protracted shades across virgin snow and recently fallen snow glistens on the brushwood of fir trees. Snowy peaks sparkle as far as the eye can see.
